When she finds herself embroiled by scandal, an utterly ruined beauteous Linnet is packed off to Wales, to be the perfect bride for a beastly doctor. Piers is gruff and ill-tempered, caused by the pain of his crippled leg. But his defenses have nothing on Linnet's charming smiles. Linnet is a heroine who is utterly beautiful both inside and out. She is also quite amusing, even managing to get laughs out of Piers, who adamantly wants nothing to do with her. Piers himself is resigned to living in misery, so it takes a good long while for him to realize that happiness is an option for him. The last few chapters of the book were so heartrending and perfect, and really gave the two the happy ending they needed to get to.

I am just starting this book. Toni Morrison is amazing but very difficult to read at times. I would love to be able to create the imagery that she creates over and over again. This was a great novel. Morrison uses myth, allegory and symbolism with language that one wants to savor. I highly recommend it. Toni Morrison is a premier and consumate writer.

Tayo is a Native that returns to his reservation after serving the U.S. in World War II. The atrocities of war lead many of his peers to drink their life away upon returning home. Tayo, instead, is torn between giving into despair and finding a way to reconnect to his people's ancient ways. He finds, in his quest to be healed, that the old ways heal best. This story is a wonderful investigation of the plight of our country's Natives, and it is told carefully and lovingly. It is also universally a story of finding redemption, hope, and even rebirth when some damage cannot be fully healed. Silko is a master of inventive narrative, seemlessly alternating between flashbacks and the present in a way that makes such a common style seem brand new. The story is devastating and uplifting and is highly rereadable. Tayo's hope and battle are in one way or another everyone's.

This is the kind of book that increases my gratitude for the written word. And I continue to be amazed at all I do not know or will never know. To read about the Congo's history told through these southern women was captivating. Kingsolver's way of expression was striking whether it was Rachael's misuse of words or Adah's palindromes or Orleanna's guilt, it painted their situations poignantly. My favorite: "But the last one: the baby who trails her scent like a flag of surrender through your life when there will be no more coming after-oh, that's love by a different name. She is the babe you hold in your arms for an hour after she's gone to sleep. She's the one you can't put down." such imagery! This is not a happy story because it's about unhappy things we can do to each other individually and collectively. But there are moments of love and beauty that testify of "opposition in all things".

If I had to recommend just one nonfiction book to friend, this would be the one. When I took an Intro to Anthropology course last year, the Prof cited and recommended this one repeatedly. I had already read it, as had several of the other students. All of us were of the same high opinion of it. Think of it as a book on why, when, and where did civilizations florish. My favorite take-away from reading it was that every plant and animal that CAN be domesticated HAD BEEN domesticated over 3000 years ago. There are good biological reasons that the first European explorers of the New World didn't find the indigenous peoples riding bison or elk, but the subsequent ones found a florishing horse culture on the American plains. Diamond's book "Collapse" is an equally well written and informative book about why civilizations have collapsed, sometimes after hundreds or thousands of years. It's never 'preachy' but there are many lessons for today if you listen carefully.

No offense to the author (and I loved Persepolis , so I don't mean any), but for all the book's charm (and it does have some), I still feel like it was composed in the same amount of time it took me to read it.

Wouldn't you freak out if you suddenly started hearing voices? That is what happened to Aaron on his eighteenth birthday in the book "The Fallen Omnibus Vol.1" by Thomas E. Sniegoski. But what he didn't know was that was the beginning of a life changing experience. one that had to do with angels, kidnapping, a talking dog, man eating people, monsters, and a romance through all the madness. This is just the beginning of his biggest life changing adventure. This is part of a four book series. This is the first book of the series. Each book being more mysterious, adventurous, and dangerous, than the last. If you truly want an exciting book than this is definitely a must read book. The genre of this book is mythical fiction. The reason why is because most of the stuff they deal with is mythical legends such as angels, monsters that were in Greek legend were all in this book. which is why I think this book's genre is mythical fiction. This is truly a book of wonders I recommend it to all who love big books of pure entertainment.
