I figure after watching Spartacus, the series, I should learn a little about the history. It was very interesting! Spartacus was Rome's "republic enemy number one" and even went so far as to insult the Romans by forcing his captured legionnaires to fight like gladiators to the death in front of his band of runaway slaves. I was fascinated to learn more about this man and the slave revolt he started with fellow gladiator Crixus.

Dean Koontz wrote this true account of his beloved Golden Retriever Trixie, or as he sometimes called her "short stuff". Since I am the mom of an 11 1/2 year old Golden, whose name is Jake, I related to so much of what he had to say. He rescued her from an organization where she had been trained to be a service dog. After she had required surgery that would keep her from doing what she loved best she was put up for adoption. Unsure if he was making a mistake by doing this he quickly learned what a vital member of his family she would be. She became the daughter he and his wife did not have. It is a tale of laughter and sadness. For anyone who owns a Golden you will really get his story. I saw so much of my Jake in this tale. While being a quick read it is also a very good book.

** spoiler alert ** Heartbreaking. Voluptuous stream of stripped, but quirkily flowing images and descriptions. Rodoreda won me over on her first page with the description: "my shoes like two drops of milk." And the surprises kept startling from there. Sandwiched between my reading of this book was my sister's wedding, and I looked at the book through this lens and found myself lost in the intricacies: Quimet transformed from a little slimy and untrustworthy in the beginning to--because of the shaking of the dove eggs and, of course, the civil war--a real and complicated character; I realized Natalia's love for him and his character (its shadow) deepened.

Wow, I thought this book would be a simple retread of a lot of the cognitive psychology stuff I learned about in College. But Gladwell brought up studies that I had never heard of, and the some of the most exciting ones that I had. I also heard that he strayed from his main thesis, but I found the book to hold together well. I especially like the parts where he talks about the ability to prepare ourselves better for blink type moments.
