A great book for all!

I felt conflicted about rating this book. I don't think it was well-written; it was organized very haphazardly and was somewhat hard to follow. And, I also had my own issues with the narrator's leaving behind her two sons in America in order to help the people of Afghanistan. Having said all of this, I am glad I read the book. It was an interesting look into a culture that I don't know much about. And, I found myself talking to people about what I was reading quite a bit, so in that sense, it was a very thought-provoking book. I wouldn't say I enjoyed reading it, however.

I absolutely loved this book, and I've probably referenced to the studies conducted by this author and the behavior of people he so brilliantly and uniquely captures. Of all the books in the behavioral economics genre, I believe this book is written best and has the strongest empirical basis - not to mention it's funny and captivating.

I read this in 9th grade and thought it was great. I read it in college and realized it's AMAZING. How an American man managed to completely and poetically write from the point of view of a Japanese geisha is incredible. The pace moves quickly when it needs to, but there are also stops made that savor the beauty of the words both in dialogue and descriptive parts. I'm not one for romance, but the relationship between Sayuri and the Chairman is so wonderfully intertwined with Sayuri's life story that it gives so much more of a look into geishas as "real" people instead of just focusing on their lives as entertainers. It's hard to describe how beautifully written Memoirs of a Geisha is in a review, it's just a book you need to read. So hypnotically addictive.

Loved this one even more than the first one!! Such an emotional book, with everything Cait had been through. I wanted to strangle her for not coming clean with Tick, and trying to push him away. Luckily, he wasn't taking no for an answer. Tick was a real man who wasn't afraid to love his woman and had no commitment issues whatsoever. Sometimes it's nice to read about those kind of guys. I knew who the bad guy was from the first, he was just super creepy. I know I have one or two books in between, but I seriously can't wait to get to Cookie and Tori's story!

A young boy in WWII era small town America is obsessed with radio programs and radio heroes such as the Lone Ranger, Sky King, and Captain Midnight. Much to the detriment of his school work and family relations, he goes about calling himself Chet Barker and his friend Mario is his trusty sidekick. He narrates adventures for them to have, suspecting his family's boarder is an evil scientist and scheming to make him leave their house. His other plan involves getting his teacher to marry his brother who was wounded in the war. Although a reader closer to our protagonist in both age and gender may have different feelings, I find Frankie an annoying, self-centered brat whose antics could very well have hurt himself and others. He did not deserve to have things turn out as well as they did for him. I would have ranked this book only one star, except for the fact that it is written entirely in dialogue, as though it was a radio show itself, which I found an interesting writing style and a quite redeeming quality. It must have been incredibly difficult to convey the story without relying on descriptive paragraphs, phrases such as 'Tom said exasperatedly' or even the sound effects and recognizably different voices that make an audio drama work.

really loved this book.
I'm still reading this one. Yes, I'm just put-putting. Anyway, Boyle does a good job of giving the reader a feeling of the world in which Richard grew up and setting up the scenario of a subject that has been overlooked by historians as a fairy-tale or legend. However, unlike the more well-known legends of King Arthur and Robin Hood, the story of Blondel and King Richard involves two individuals we can proove existed and centers around a kidnapping that did, in fact, take place. I haven't gotten to his examination of the song and the rescue of Richard, but from what I've read so far, Boyle will do an expert job of clearing the truth from the fairy-tale, or at least give the reader the information they need to form their own opinion.

a nice overview of why people believe in made-up stuff (like alien abduction/demon possession) though it gets a bit derailed towards the end and turns into a defense of the importance of science.

Fun, reminded me of the film "Risky Business." Made me chuckle.
