Mariette Papic _ariette_apic — This is one of the most singularly lovely stories every written. The original french is almost incomparable to the english version, and I thoroughly reccomend either having it read aloud to you in french or reading it aloud to yourself.

Michelle L lportermichelle — I liked Pretties, I did. But I started to feel like I was reading Uglies all over again, with Tally's personal growth issues and the drama at the end. There are a number of important philosophical arguments in Pretties, mainly around the idea of thinking for yourself instead of being a sheep, and also about majority populations exploiting minorities, but they're glossed over, their potential impact falling flat. I hope that Specials is not just another retelling of this same story.

Nicolas Hon ninodzn — I read this in 9th grade and thought it was great. I read it in college and realized it's AMAZING. How an American man managed to completely and poetically write from the point of view of a Japanese geisha is incredible. The pace moves quickly when it needs to, but there are also stops made that savor the beauty of the words both in dialogue and descriptive parts. I'm not one for romance, but the relationship between Sayuri and the Chairman is so wonderfully intertwined with Sayuri's life story that it gives so much more of a look into geishas as "real" people instead of just focusing on their lives as entertainers. It's hard to describe how beautifully written Memoirs of a Geisha is in a review, it's just a book you need to read. So hypnotically addictive.

Izmars Ramsey ramzizmr_1fbb8 — I love Carl Hiaasen and I've read most things he's written multiple times. Like his previous novels, Nature Girl is a dark comedy about inept criminals, shysters and the dregs of society, all of whom exist in large quanities throughout Florida, and increase in number the further south you go. Although Hiaasen's novels do comically reflect Florida's generally sorry state of affairs, Hiaasen's profound love for the Sunshine State and fierce hatred of its despoilers clearly comes through and inspires and entertains those of us who have come to love it as well.
