very interesting book about forms of popular resistance at three points in chinese history. in particular, his analysis of the taiping rebellion and taiwanese popular religion are very interesting in light of the ideas of saturation and precipitation he puts forth. the tiananmen chapter feels a bit of a stretch from the conceptual framework he sets up, but sparks some interesting thought nonetheless.

Charming. my favorite quote: ""You’ll find," he remarked gently, "that the only thing you can do easily is be wrong, and that’s hardly worth the effort."

Amazing! For such a short book, about 300 pages, there was so much packed into it! I could not help but being drawn into the book. Sarah Jio has done an absolutely wonderful job describing the scenery and surroundings. She makes you feel like you are a bystander even in the flashbacks. And best of all, she kept me guessing as to who was whom in the book. Anyway you look at it, this is a heart wrenching love story and I could not help but feel touched by it. It's hard to believe this is her debut novel. Brava Ms.Jio! Brava!

Reading this book will change your life for the better. It is the word of God -- scripture revealed to and written down by prophets living in ancient America. It contains the truths of the gospel of Jesus Christ. There is a power in this book as you read it. Combining the study of this and the Bible will increase your knowledge of God and His plan for his children -- where we came from before birth, the purpose of this life, and where we'll go after death.

In The Mole People, Jennifer Toth's stated goal is "to dismiss the myth of animal-like underground dwellers."(x) Her journalistic approach to telling the stories of New York's underground homeless population includes a bit of statistical reports and cultural & historical context among the personal tales of life in the train and subway tunnels. As she gets to know the members of this invisible population, Toth examines her own cultural lens and judgments as an educated woman with white privilege. We learn about the backgrounds of people who find their best option is to move underground, whether for safety or escape, away from the dangers of life on the streets or the threat of legal repercussions. While reading this book, I was amazed at Jennifer Toth's audacity and bravery at overcoming a fear that many of us "upstairs" have of those living on the margins of society. Her young age (she researched and wrote this in her early twenties) and status as a woman put her in danger in the tunnels, and several times in the book she mentions being warned away by tunnel dwellers because of the danger. Some of the book gets to be a bit repetitive, which is an outcome of the organization of the book into topical chapters, and some topics are covered several times in different sections. I have read a couple of critiques of the validity of Toth's book, and Toth herself mentions the denials and disinformation related to underground homeless. The book was published 16 years ago, and I don't plan to enter the tunnels to check. Here is a link to photos of one of the tunnels http://www.citynoise.org/article/8210, with the graffiti murals on the walls. Toth also interviewed several graffiti artists during her research.

This book has affected my life as a Christian since reading it. The life of Compassion is a journey to be more like Jesus! I love Nouwen's ability to condense insight and depth into simple ideas and thoughts. Everyone should read the chapter on displacement as they consider what it looks like to be part of a Christian community of any sort.

A really sweet story. No real conflict, just two extremely sweet guys being sweet to each other. Sweet reactions from family and friends. Sweet reactions from total strangers. Sweet little old man neighbor, being sweet to the sweet boy living in his building. Sweet cop being sweet to everyone. Sweet beginning, sweet middle, sweet ending. Have I mentioned this story is sweet?

Wow! Where to begin. This book was awesome! I loved it. The continuing story of Meghan, Ash, and Puck had me hooked and could not put down the book because I kept on wanting to know what was going to happen. I was barely hanging on by the edge of my seat in anticipation. I was not let down like I am with some sequels. I was torn throughout between Puck and Ash and who I wanted Meghan to be with. This book had just enough of the "romance stuff" to appease the hopeless romantics intertwined with suspense, danger and intrigue. Would definitely recommend to others and I cant wait to start on the next adventure.

** spoiler alert ** I really enjoyed this book a lot. Any people who say that Patch and Nora parallell Edward Cullen and Bella Swan are WRONG; Patch and Nora are very unlike Edward and Bella. First of all, initially Nora wants nothing to do with Patch, and is just as much of a smart-you-know-what as he is, while Bella is obsessed with and drooling over from the very beginning. Patch is not the super-protective, I-can't-live-without-my-human-girlfriend type. He's actually funny and normal, for a teenage guy. Yes, he's a fallen angel, but it takes a lot of prodding for Nora to get him to confess that. I like their relationship, and his funny, sly nature, and all of his scenes with Nora are really intense and sweet, with some comic relief. Overall, this was a really good book, and I look forward to reading Crescendo.
