Maybe it's because I'd been wanting to read this for so long and had high expectations for it, but I really wasn't that impressed. It was an okay read, but I wouldn't recommend it.

Elizabeth Becker, as a correspondent for the Washington Post had spent a great deal of time in Cambodia before the Khymer Rouge came to power. This book is her fascinating history of the political machinations of their most public figures within the last century. The horrors of the Khymer Rouge regime are here as well with some personal stories of people Ms. Becker knew to add a human touch to a larger story.

C. S. Lewis takes his own twist on The Cupid/Psyche myth in this book. In the original myth, the jealousy of Psyche's 2 sisters causes them to purposely sabotage her relationship with Cupid. Lewis's story, however, centers around the relationship of the elder sister, Orual, with Psyche. Orual is both the protagonist and storyteller. She suffers from a sort of obsessive love, which causes her to think she's protecting Psyche when she sabotages her relationship with Cupid. However, in truth she's not allowing Psyche to enjoy a life that doesn't include Orual as the center of attention. She then puts down in writing her anger and many grievances with the gods for causing her life to go so badly, and thereafter dwells on that anger. After years of torment and self-discovery, the gods finally allow Orual to bring her grievances to them, and the simple telling of her case allows her to see the truth of what really happened, and how it was she who wreaked havoc on her own life and the lives of those around her. Orual realizes that it truly was her own jealousy and obsessions at the root of the problem. If I'm interpreting the title of the book correctly, "Till We Have Faces," suggests that we have to come to a true knowledge and understanding of ourselves and what motivates us... to truly see/know who we are... before we can receive any sort of audience with or answers from the divine. In a nutshell... we need to be honest with ourselves about our motives.

Having been so highly rated by so many others I was shocked at how boring I found this book to be. I debated giving up on it more than once. My biggest hang up was the fact that all of the characters were named after each other so I couldn't keep anyone straight. I had no idea who I was reading about half the time and what their backstory was. Also, the amount of family incest was just a little too much for me to handle.

This one is weaker than the first which was Mystic and Rider. That's probably because the main character, Kirra, is just plain less interesting, although she's a shapeshifter. But the premise is a bit novel, Kirra's sister Casserah doesn't want to do a tour of the countryside to help strengthen her family's political power, so Kirra goes in her place. The novel suffers a lot from my desire to strangle Kirra for doing really stupid things like falling in love with someone while wearing her sister's appearance and ignoring her childhood companion, who would clearly be much better for her. But in the end it's more of the same. Everyone is after mystics. The end.

You see the movie and you read the book and you think, This is awesome, I mean a little gross but totally awesome, yeah! It rules! Yeah! It rules like Slayer and lightning! And then you get a job in Midtown working for people just like Luis Carruthers and Patrick Bateman and it doesn't rule so hard anymore, it just seems pretty normal, all of it.
