Tiago Pereira _icrocosmos95 — I expected to like this book much more than I did. I loved the first one and everyone who’s read this sequel said the Perilous Journey wasn’t a whit behind its predecessor. I don’t know, then, if it was something about my mood or my preferences that swayed my opinion, but I didn’t find this book nearly as charming as The Mysterious Benedict Society. This sequel is more action-packed than the first, more full of adventure. For most people, that’s probably a good thing. But I thrive more on character development and witty dialogue — I tend to glaze over “exciting” action scenes whether it be in movies or in books — and so this book just wasn’t as fun as the first. There were still exciting moments of watching the foursome use their unique talents to solve interesting puzzles, but the "climactic" ending fell a little bit flat for me. I felt like there were significantly fewer twists and riddles than the first one, and I missed that. Nevertheless, I’m still planning on reading the third one, once I get my hands on it (we’re on a long hold list at the library right now) — and I still recommend that you read The Mysterious Benedict Society if you haven’t yet!

Joseph Renny connectren5131 — 'A Little Princess' is a book I really enjoyed as a child. As a young child I enjoyed the Ladybird version and as I got older I read the full version by Frances Hodgson Burnett. It tell the story of a girl called Sarah who is sent to boarding school in England after living with her soldier father in India. To begin with she has the best of everything as her father provides everything she could ever want. Then her father dies and her unkind head mistress Miss Minchin, who has never liked Sarah, sets her to work as a servant. Sarah as a character is very likeable. She is kind to others, intelligent and uses her vivid imagination to keep her spirits up in the worst of times. She imagines she is a princess who will soon be rescued from her reduced circumstances, which indeed she is when her kindness is recognised by a servant and in time his master, who moves into the house next door to the boarding school and adopts Sarah. The illustrations in the Ladybird version are very appealing I particularly liked how they depicted Sarah's change in circumstances. When reading the story as a young child the Indian servant seemed exotic and intriguing, making the story all the more appealing. It is definitely a children's classic with a predictable happy ending and would probably appeal more to girls than boys. It affirms the importance of being kind to others and stirs the imagination.

Michael Joudal myispguy — It's really hard to rate Bel Ami. On one hand, I remained interested in the story. On the other hand, Georges and his bevy of beauties made me want to reach thru time the throttle the lot of them. I'm sure that this will make for a great discussion at our book club. The theme of attaining power from sexual frolics is as real today as it was then. I simply wish that Bel-Ami would have ended up face first in a gutter somewhere!
