Simon Goez cultsoftheshadow — Somehow this book was in the jail library at the same time that I was doing a two month stretch for ... that's not important. I remember lying in my bunk, reading this between naps, and dreaming about it. I'm pretty sure I was obsessed with his story, his trial, his imprisonment, and the eventual appearance of the guillotine character. Amazing. The man was sentenced to death because he didn't get along with his mother. And the machine of death, the guillotine, wow. I was transfixed with the parallels and somehow took copious jailhouse notes on the philosophical and symbolic of the story Camus had woven. I only gave it four stars because the translation, in the beginning, left something to be desired, although, it felt appropriate so I wouldn't change a thing.

Creative Graphics creative_graphic — After having unsuccessfully tried to read The Loved Ones, I wasn't sure how this Waugh would sit with me. But there's a reason this is considered his best work. His use of metaphor alone won me over. His characterization of university (see excerpt below) in the first half of the book resonated with me. His treatment of purposeless upperclass young Englishmen between the Wars was much more eloquent than Messud's treatment of purposeless upperclass young Americans post 9/11 in Emporer's Children. If you give this a try, don't linger with the prologue: get on with it, and you'll be rewarded. This one goes out to all of my college friends: Looking back, now, after twenty years, there is little I would have left undone or done otherwise.... I could tell [my cousin] that all the wickedness of that time was like the spirit they mix with the pure grape of the Douro, heady stuff full of dark ingredients; it at once enriched and retarded the whole process of adolescence as the spirit checks the fermentation of the wine, renders it undrinkable, so that it must lie in the dark, year in, year out, until it is brought up at last fit for the table. I could tell him, too, that to know and love one other human being is the root of all wisdom. But I felt no need for these sophistries.... I had my secret and sure defence, like a talisman worn in the bosom, felt for in the moment of danger, found and firmly grasped.

Khaled Alafif alafif — Several years ago, my art teacher announced an assignment for the few underclassmen that remained in my drawing class after the seniors graduated: we were to do sidewalk paintings. She then turned on the overhead projector and showed us absolutely amazing artistic feats in this medium where the viewer looked like they were going to fall right into the drawings, where the perspective was so masterfully done that it looked like things were rising up from the street despite the fact that they were done in chalk pastels. Long story short, we didn’t succeed because after two class periods of sitting in the hot sun came the biggest rainstorm in five months and washed away all that work. After reading “Sidewalk Canvas,” only now do I realize just how little any of us knew about the art of sidewalk painting. “Sidewalk Canvas” starts out as many other art books do, with brief history of the craft and a gallery of related examples. Julie Kirk has done her research and really relates the origins of sidewalk paintings in a way that is both informative and entertaining. However, where this books really gets good is when she moves from simple show and tell to explaining how the depth of perspective is achieved. In some, it’s a matter of single or multiple point perspective, or perhaps a cast shadow in the right spot. Others, like the anamorphic perspective that is utilized by well known street painters with such enormous effects, are much more complicated. Kirk not only explains the basic theory behind creating anamorphic drawings, but then goes on to take the readers step-by-step on gridding out their own anamorphic sidewalk paintings. [image error] This book concludes with a basic chapter on color theory and drawing as well as a not-so-basic tips and techniques section that anyone that wishes to become a sidewalk artist would benefit from reading prior to starting any project. As a sidewalk painter herself, Kirk is able to give solid advice that even those that have had some experience in the field might find handy. With the unique voice, stunning visuals, and absolutely priceless advice, I would say that this book is a must-read for any artist. This galley was obtained from Netgalley.com for review purposes.

Ekin Göcen _etti_ue — In The Mole People, Jennifer Toth's stated goal is "to dismiss the myth of animal-like underground dwellers."(x) Her journalistic approach to telling the stories of New York's underground homeless population includes a bit of statistical reports and cultural & historical context among the personal tales of life in the train and subway tunnels. As she gets to know the members of this invisible population, Toth examines her own cultural lens and judgments as an educated woman with white privilege. We learn about the backgrounds of people who find their best option is to move underground, whether for safety or escape, away from the dangers of life on the streets or the threat of legal repercussions. While reading this book, I was amazed at Jennifer Toth's audacity and bravery at overcoming a fear that many of us "upstairs" have of those living on the margins of society. Her young age (she researched and wrote this in her early twenties) and status as a woman put her in danger in the tunnels, and several times in the book she mentions being warned away by tunnel dwellers because of the danger. Some of the book gets to be a bit repetitive, which is an outcome of the organization of the book into topical chapters, and some topics are covered several times in different sections. I have read a couple of critiques of the validity of Toth's book, and Toth herself mentions the denials and disinformation related to underground homeless. The book was published 16 years ago, and I don't plan to enter the tunnels to check.
