Jeff Huang jeffhuang — The book is a tad on the slow side, but you know from the beginning that there's a mystery, and the intrigue and curiosity get you through the slower moments. A young maid serving a wealthy English family during World War I, witnesses (along with the two daughters of the house) a suicide, and those three are the only ones who know what truly happened that night. The entirety of the novel is in flashbacks, as the then 98 year old woman recounts her memory of her years serving, and the secrets she knew.

Elena Osenbrüg elena_senbrueg — Kaye Gibbons won an award with her first book and it is now read in many schools....good story.....and after all these years she has written a sequel that continues the story of Ellen (The Life All Around Me)....it's good too.

Kaiyi Shih kaiyi26 — I forget where I got this but I'm glad I found it. This is great for people like me who love to learn about personal experiences during the Holocaust. It's different in that unique way each person experiences something and that affects me. I absolutely adored the photos and I loved how they were included as well. Instead of having the usual photo insert Kimmelman put them in sporadically and that really gave a lot to the book IMO. I'd definitely recommend to anyone looking for personal accounts - you can find many, some more well written than others and this isn't one of the best written and it's certainly not one of the worst. The fact that Kimmelman is obviously very intelligent makes the writing that much better. What she had to endure to survive is horrendous. All of it is horrendous but reading a book like this - and being brought into the story, into the persons life - brings it so much closer to home.

Jamie Shawcross jshawcross3d — didn't realize til this particular book that i was in the middle of another series. thankfully, i HAD read the first one of it, unknowingly, so was not lost on who/what some of the characters were. interesting faith struggle. easy to understand. sad, tho, how many of us react that way, and how many of us hold on to "grudges", and for SSOOO long! yes, myself included %(

Lika Porhomenko sdfsdf45654 — I thought all of these stories were pretty cute, and the one with George blends the gap between two other books, so it was worth the read I think.
