feliciob1bf
Anderson Felício feliciob1bf — ** spoiler alert ** I have such mixed emotions about this book that I don't even know if I can make a coherent review, but I'll try. I thought it was very interesting to look at the Holocaust through the eyes of an innocent child. When we think of Nazi Germany, we automatically think of the evil men and woman who killed millions of innocent people based on their religious beliefs, but often times we forget that it was also a place filled with families and children of Nazis who had little to no involvement. In the case of Bruno's family, his mother and grandmother were very against the war and could not believe that the father was doing this "job". Bruno never gets the whole story about his father's life, but the way he looked up to him, almost like a superhero, was heartbreaking because he just saw the side of his father at home. Bruno was so innocent and even when he sees the other soldiers around his home, he doesn't think his father could ever be like them. Bruno's innocence is one of the big problems I had with this book, though. I feel as though he was too innocent. While most of the world did not know genocide was occurring in Europe, Bruno lived so close to it that it's hard to believe he would have known nothing about what happened at the camps. As the son of a Nazi, he would have been taught that "Jews are bad" and when his sister brings it up to him the first time, he is shocked and has no idea. That is unbelievable to me. In fact, most of the book is unbelievable to me. I don't even know what I'm saying. This book got me all twisted up. I would recommend it still, but not to everyone.

Ariel Martín arielmartinperez — One of the high-water marks of sci-fi. I avoided this book for years, simply because I loved "Ender's Game" so much and knew that any follow up would be a disapointment; when I finally read it (at Mulzer's urging), it was, in fact, even better than "Ender". I remember finishing this book on a plane and sobbing and sobbing, embarassed about weeping over a mass-market paper-back science fiction novel. I don't like it when people say a sci-fi book "trancends the genre", so I'll say it lives up to the potential that science fiction so often falls short of - a strange setting and alien life allows you to see humanity in a new way that would have been impossible without the distance of the premise. This is a book you will want to force upon friends for years.

Lyn L _inkavocado — As a writer, I'm interested in experimentation and forging new ideas in literature. There are a few things I like to do in my stories specifically to deal with current trends or problems. TeBordo has already done them for me and better. 1. Imprecision of language Language seems to be saturated with a more and more imprecise lexicon, a sort of dumbing down where words become devalued and meaningless. But it is possible through word choice and context to actually use imprecision as a means of expansion. So that a word that once meant little or nothing can mean anything. "It was a passive loss, as opposed to an active one. He didn't drop something on the ground or leave it beneath a discarded newspaper in a restaurant or even never have something at all. Someone had taken something of his against his will. The man who was walking away." ("Took and Lost") I like to use pronouns in preference to names because "he" or "she" could be anyone, could be you. And TeBordo goes even further, sometimes referring to a person as "it." 2. Fragmentation I don't know TeBordo's motives, but I have been interested in using fragments and improper grammar for a couple of reasons. a. With the prevalence of such tools as spell check and grammar check, using fragments can indicate intention. By creating new sentences, the writer refuses to lean on such props. b. Another reason is the intentional breaking of a rule. Who says every sentence needs to sound exactly the same? Why should we obey Microsoft's conceptions of proper grammar? You know what? Screw Microsoft and MLA and rules. c. "Correct English is not usually the strongest kind of English." -The Instructions "I asked him if he was behind the curtain. I asked him if he was decent. He didn't answer so I pulled the curtain open with my free hand and looked in. To check on the ice. And the boy because I was the leader of me and him." (The Champion of Forgetting") 3. Non Sequitur There is only one reason to use a non sequitur: to introduce disorder and upset a reader's expectations. And to be funny. "'I should be finding my way back to my apartment where my wife is awaiting me being patient,' I say. 'Besides, there's a doormat on the first floor embroidered with dolphins frolicking in a moonlit sea.'" ("Three Denials") These are just some of the reasons Christian Tebordo is the author I will never be but aspire to become.

Carmen Torres _armen_orres_abeza — Food with a capital F saturates every page of this often predictable yet pleasant novel. Angelina's recipes are sprinkled throughout, though they look way too complicated to actually make. 'Tis a shame, because the author is creator and executive producer of a show on Food Network and has written cookbooks. This is his first novel, which isn't a surprise. His wife -- a culinary writer and producer -- is responsible for the recipes.
