Barbara Kania barbara_kania — I seem to be a rarity. People either love this book or hate it. I started out loving it but I can't believe in Rand's theories on Objectivism. The truth is; sometimes people are motivated by love of someone other than yourself. People donate kidneys to total strangers or become blood donors or give gifts anonymously. Her premise is that those who don't consider their own needs are somehow to be lumped in with the "looters" of the book. I don't buy it. The antagonists of the book, the "looters", aren't giving of themselves they are giving of others. The book has elements of capitalism vs socialism and I am in total agreement with Rand here; but she omits other aspects of society. Rand is an atheist so she discounts religion in any form. But, the reality is that religion exists and people are motivated by its teachings. She discusses the evils of overregulation (I totally agree) but fails to acknowledge that with change comes new markets and new industries of those adapting to the change. In short, she over-simplifies society and human behavior. If this was just a work of fiction I wouldn't bother to critique her so, but she, and many others, hold this out as a lesson in Objectivism. It is a good story but before you run off to join the Rand Institute, do some critical thinking for yourself.
