Sara Ashraf _ara12 — Oh, what a beautiful, breath-taking, absolute marvel of a book. The poetry, the tragedy, the comic relief--- all woven seamlessly together to create a vivid and engaging reading experience. Sir Terry's prose should be considered an international treasure. I laughed, I cried, I leaned forward in suspense, and I pondered. Yes, pondered. A lot of issues are tackled here: the roots of belief, the ethics of cultural imperialism, the foundations of the patriarchy, the basis of a moral system, the search for a national identity, and so on and so forth. The characters are all amazing in their own ways, but it's Daphne who steals the show. She's intelligent, fiery, quick to take matters into her own hands and is, overall, one of the most positive female protagonists I've encountered. Her dynamic with Mau is right up there with the novel's numerous strong points. I loved their interactions and how they deal with the culture clash and language barrier, how they slowly work their way around these things to form a solid bond that resonates with the reader long after the book ends. I don't know how Sir Terry manages to combine mysticism and alternate history into a tale that is so real, that, at its core, is deeply human, so I can only describe it as a kind of magic. This is world-building at its richest and writing at its best.
