Felix Barthauer _elix_arthauer — i know this is controversial--i'd heard it wasn't as good as his other books before i read it. But despite the fact that it didn't have the magical realism elements of his other books, i found similarity in that I felt completely immersed in the world of the book while i was reading it. And it was very compelling without having much of a plot.

Jordan Loscher jordanloscher — Oh, where to start without giving anything away? It is an epic story with incredibly beautiful and sensitive writing. I took awhile to get fully into the web of the story, but once caught, I couldn't leave. My limited reading of readers reviews allowed me free rein to enjoy the book on my own. I don't like anyone telling me what I should and shouldn't like. Ultimately, I feel compelled to defend this story. Who says anthropomorphism ruins literature? If it is handled well, is brief and not overdone, it works. It did, magnificently. I was taken by it and glad it didn't last long. That might have ruined the sensitivity. I was a little jolted by the fragmentary characters such as Ida, the little girl, the man in the shed, however I can not join the crowd who say that the author didn't build up his characters with enough information. You got enough of each of them to gather what you needed to understand their place in the story. Ida was introduced early on as an odd bird. Her trances are able to give information to those who seek it. Trudy was torn, but listened. Edgar, too. What more do you need? Doesn't every small town have a person that people are a little spooked by? You don't need to know more than what was portrayed. The man in the shed was a bit unnecessary even to me, but he was there and I dealt with it and moved on. He didn't ruin the story for me. The vision in the rain and in the barn towards the end was reassuring to me, not destructive. I felt Edgar was very well explained. He grew so much in the story and developed completely. His voice was loud and clear to me at all times. The uncanny ability he had communicating with the dogs that was completely wordless. Dogs can't talk, so why is it far-fetched to have them understand a silent language of sign and visual clues? Anyone with animals knows they read our body language even when they don't understand our words. The training of the dogs did play a huge part in this novel, but I found it structured the characters-gave them depth and determination. A binding gift, something that tied them all to the land, each other and the dogs. The silent language that builds over time in relationships between husband and wife, parent and child and siblings as well. Not all of those languages are healthy as in Gar and Claude's situation. I didn't need to have the 'whys' fed to me as some of the critical readers apparently did. I don't need to know why Gar and Claude were at odds, they just were. It ran deeply and was scarring. Anyone who has known brothers or sisters who have fought knows that sometimes the hurts don't go away with age and time. I don't need to have the ending spelled out. Isn't it obvious? I don't have to have everything tied up into a neat bow of conclusion in order to appreciate the fine art of this author's work. Read this book and make your own decisions. We are all entitled to love or hate a book. What appeals to one, repels another. I felt that though it was a very long story, it built in intensity. It could have been shorter, but who would you eliminate? The marvelously "ordinary" Henry? One of the dogs? Trudy and Gars agony in their early marriage? Almondine? I miss all of these characte I think we all need an Almondine in our lives.
