An interesting travelogue that almost lost me halfway through due to a repetitious skimming of the surface. Once the book finds its skin, it begins to get into some crazy events of modern Orthodox saints. Coincidently, this book opened up for me an entirely fresh approach to the concept of "hell", although the idea of hell discussed in this book is older than the one I previous held from Thomist Catholic teaching.

A very peculiar production, in which the Kinkster tries to make nice; Kinky as a fablist is kinda like a pig wearing lipstick. There are, to be sure, occasional flashes of Kinky's caustic wit, and even a couple of all too brief nods to the Greenwich Village Irregulars (Myers of Keswick, and, even more briefly, the late Tom Baker and Kacey Cohen, "the girl in the peach colored dress"). The eponymous pig displays a distressing tendancy to talk like Oscar Wilde. If I came across a epigramatic pig, I would have only one thing to say to it: "Bacon".

I read (or rather listened to) Freedom first, and I liked it so much that The Correction is on the to read list. The story about the dysfunctional family is very well written, but very depressing as well. I fate it slightly lower than The Freedom.

This is a delightful tale of a little pig that doesn't like to get dirty. His family are a bunch of messy oinkers and Otis just doesn't fit in. However, he stays true to who he is and finds friendship in the place he would least expect it.

How much should we divorce an idea from the one stating it? How much can we forgive of a philosophy that has motivated a man to support a movement that was decidedly murderous? How much should philosophy be accountable to its consequences and/or be able to play out in reality. I am really enjoying Wolin's analysis of the effect of Heidegger's 'fall' on four of his Jewish students and the ways in which they were able to explain/analyse/reconcile/reject Heidegger's teachings in their post war work. These are questions that have been nagging me in my own lay person's reading of philosophy and I am glad to have them touched upon in this very readable text.

I've always enjoyed Dennis Prager's commentary on the radio and his syndicated columns, at least when they used to be included in the LA Times. He's a clear and logical thinker, cutting right to the ethical truth of certain ills besetting our society. The first half of this book was enjoyable for me, and Prager's views on what causes unhappiness and what makes us happy is a nice reminder that our own mindset is what prevents our joy - not our circumstances. Definitely reminiscent of the teachings of Epictetus, Marcus Aurelius, and some of the tenets of Buddhism. The last half of the book is a little creepy. Prager's belief that ALL men have an insatiable lust for sexual variety and that ALL women have an insatiable need for emotional intimacy made me cringe. It's just too unsubtle for me. Then his espousal of religion as one of the pillars of happiness did me in. I had other issues as well (including his emphasis on marriage and having children), but this will do for now.

I absolutely loved this ending book in the Neanderthal trilogy. We continue to follow the story Ponter and Mary as they attempt to make a live for themselves in the now connected parallel earths. I loved the progression of the story as well as the ending. Very good trilogy!!
