I read this book out loud in one go today. It is the best thing to ever melt my mind-throat in three billion years. get some: " I remember pretending to be floating in the ocean imagining or pretending or pretending to imagine coming across something floating by something anything a bottle a bottle floating in the empty space floating in the ocean a bottle with a piece of paper rolled up inside I would open the bottle reach inside to retrieve the rolled up piece of paper and I still after all these years I still remember exactly what the words said the exact words written on the piece of paper when I unrolled it do not lose hope "

I didn't enjoy this book as much as I expected to, especially considering it won the Booker Prize. It may also be that it seemed just a bit too similar to other Indian fiction I've read, and yet not as powerful as some of my favorites. It didn't really engage me until the very end-the middle was particularly slow for me.

I keep this thing on the shelf by my pillow to pick up whenever I feel like getting a good dose of erudition. I don't think I'll ever get through all of these essays, I'll just pick one at random and read for a few pages. Montaigne tends to jump to three or four subjects within the course of one essay and ending up somewhere completely different than where he started, so it's not like you miss anything by opening it at random. Who knew that the father of the essay was such a rambling, non-linear thinker?

On rereading this, I'm moving it up to four stars; having explored the 1980s Jeter-Blaylock-Powers roots of steampunk, this is by far the most satisfying of the narratives. I have some trouble warming to the narrator, Brendan Doyle (even though he's a professor of 19th century literature), but the plotting is satisfying, and the secondary character Jacky is winning. And there's Byron, and Coleridge, and the lovely paradox of William Ashbless . . .

It is reported that there are 15,000 books on the Civil War in the Library of Congress, so the natural question is where do you start? Furthermore, Most of the "seminal" Civil War works are volumes and thousands of pages. Well in 850 pages, McPherson provides succint, yet thorough historical writing of the highest caliber. It unmuddies the waters as to the reasons for the country's schism and the start of the war and provides the necessary level of detail as to the prosecution of the war without going inot excruciating detail about troop movements and the like. Perhaps the most remarkable piece of the book was the eiplogue in which McPherson presents an interesting point about America's notions of liberty and freedom. Whereas before the Civil War the nation was intent on keeping Americans free from things, the Civil War represented a shift in that the government was now thought of as a agent that gave people freedom to things.

I liked both main characters in this book for being different. I also liked the treatment of crime science investigation in a whole different century and combined with a genre where one would never expect to come across it. Jillian is smart and gutsy and Connor is just plain hot and sexy.

** spoiler alert ** To start, I am going to review the most recent book series that I have read. This is a new series by Thea Harrison called the Elder Races. The first book in the series is Drgon Bound. This is a fun book. The two lead characters are Pia and Dragos. Pia, a Wyr half-breed, is forced to commit a dangerous crime - to steal something from the Dragon's hoard. Dragos, the Dragon, is the leader of the Wyr demesne (pronounced much like "domain") and has been alive since before time began. He is a powerful creature who happens to be very protective of his hoard. By stealing from him, Pia has put herself in his sights and put her life in his hands. What I love about this series is the interaction between all the characters! Though I love romance novels and the different genres within that, I will admit that the intensity of them can get to me. I like when there is the "tension break" of secondary characters that are as well written and evolved as the main characters. That is the case with this series. The interaction between Pia and Dragos's crew of supporters is what makes this more than a romance novel and makes it a great story.
