The artwork was fantastic, the characters were relatable, and I appreciate that Larson told a realistic story rather than the fantastic stories that usually populate graphic novels. However, there were a few times when I was confused about what was going on. Larson needs to find a better blend of art and text to convey the story. A good editor should have picked up on this.

Like The Killer Angels, this book is very good at revealing the personal struggles and thoughts of some leading figures in the Civil War. It's engaging, informative, and a must read for anyone with an interest with history. However, I much preferred his father's book, The Killer Angels. Perhaps a comparison is a bit unfair due to the timespan, but this type of book seemed to work better with three days instead of three years. And I liked Michael Shaara's style a bit better, though they are similar. Overall, though, this book is certainly worth reading and it does a good job capturing the human elements of the struggle, as well as explaining crucial events at the beginning of the war.

The book describes the unplanned cascade of technological and social shifts that effectively leveled the economic world, and accidentally made Beijing, Bangalore and Bethesda next-door neighbors. The book analyzes the fall of the Berlin's Wall; the rise of Netscape and the dotcom boom that led to a trillion dollar investment in fiber optic cable; the emergence of common software platforms and open source code enabling global collaboration; and the rise of outsourcing, offshoring, supply chaining and insourcing as flattener events.

** spoiler alert ** So had me on the edge of my seat during the whole book. Although I do wish the nature of Adora and Amma had been kept secret for a little longer.

I read this book many many years ago. I believe it made me fall in love. I have been looking for this for a while I would like it on my e-reader but I can’t find it, I still have my copy and I want to pass it on but not until I get the e-book. This story is about true love of two young people, Annie and Carl and their struggles. It is set in Brooklyn, where I was born and raised so I was able to relate. Just thinking about this book brings a longing to read it again, I guess I know what I will be doing tonight. The movie they made from this book stared Richard Chamberlain and Tuesday Weld, they were just adorable, I would love to see the movie again too.

A frustrating and slow read at first, but Light in August, was like the first taste of hard liquor - sticking with it gave me a strong appreciation for the art and arc of the story. A compelling story about fear and redemption, that also shows race and bigotry is inextricable from the American narrative.

Wow. This book is a pit of despair. You think things can't get any worse for the characters, but they always do. Its extremely well-written and effectively captures the horror & terror of the 1975 Emergency in India. The effects of the Emergency are seen in the lives of the 4 main characters - a student, a widow, and 2 poor tailors who are all thrown together by chance. Sometimes I found that the characters were a bit thinly drawn but that became better over the course of the book. A difficult, sad book but well worth the emotional energy.

I may have to give this book a second look. Most who read it think it's terrific. I felt like it was a throwback to the days when the Boxcar children reigned supreme in the world of children's literature. The author spends a lot of time convincing the readers of her characters' unique personalities--Skye is the tomboy--the very smart tomboy; Jane is the girly--very smart--once and future writer; Rosalind is the sensible (very smart) mother stand-in for the youngest child, who is distressingly and pathologically shy. The children's mother has died and the father is kind--very smart (speaks Latin to the children) and detached. Other characters are barely developed and the problems that come up that need to be solved are predictable. Having adored the Boxcar children growing up, I shouldn't really mind the trip down memory lane in terms of style, setting and character development, but I missed the grittiness of more contemporary literary characters like Harper Lee Morgan (Also Known as Harper)or Annie, struggling to make sense of the death of her brother in Umbrella Summer.

I watched a filmstrip (if you know what that is) in elementary school about this story and it was a total acid trip. It really tripped me out as a kid. I started reading it once and it started freaking me out because I thought of the weird filmstrip. Once I got past the first few chapters, I got past the childhood flashbacks and started enjoying it. The story, although weird, is fun and very nerdy. It is a great fantasy. Very original and a quick read.
