I know this is supposedly one of the greatest classics of all time and I love Mark Twain's style of writing, but I could not make it through this book. I've read excerpts of Twain's that I enjoyed and still look forward to rereading the Adventures of Tom Sawyer, but I'm sad to say I really did not enjoy Huckleberry Finn. I feel I'm incredibly wrong in disliking it though so I will try it again in the future.

A structurally complicated historical novel despite being only 217 pp. Nicholas Dyer, early 18th century architect, practitioner of the dark arts and murderer reaches out through time to modern London creating "Terrour" leaving corpses at the sites of the churches he designed. Time is particularly out of joint and the "shaddowes" of the fear and irrationality he believes to be stronger than sense and reason make themselves felt. In its own quirky and studied way this is a very scary novel.

I absolutely loved this book! It was very relateable and emotional. And as Gaston has pointed out in interviews, there is so much great Canadian literature, and so much Canadian love for hockey, but the two rarely combine. And in this instance they do and the result is great.

Sequel to Shanghai Girls, although to be honest I didn't remember a lot of the details from that one and I was fine. Joy is a Chinese-American who has just finished her first year of college in 1958. Angry after her father's suicide, she runs away to become a member of Red China. Her mother follows her to try and convince her to come back. I found the descriptions of what went on in the communes horrifying and disturbing, yet the entire book was compelling.

Great book! I would have liked it even more if it wasn't written completely in letters and telegrams. But that is just a personal preference. (I'm not a fan of books comprised of letters to and from people, diaries, etc. I find it distracting and a bit of an annoyance). However, I still truly liked this book and highly recommend it to all my friends.

The author provides a convincing argument that our modern criminal justice system is not too different from the criminal justice system that put Jesus to death. If anything, the book helped me see our system in a new light and opened my eyes to some of the more unjust parts. A nice unexpected side-effect that I hadn't anticipated, was a renewed appreciation for the life of Jesus Christ and his unflappable perfection, charity, and goodness in the face of gross injustice, hatred, and abuse.

This is such a neat work! It really is a short history of nearly everything. It is scientific in nature, but it is easy to understand and even humorous in parts. I learned a lot and enjoyed it immensely.
