Orson Scott Card has proven over and over that he is one of the best (if not the absolute best) science fiction writers living today. His mithermages series, of which this is the first, promises a new world of wonderful magic, very realistic and well-drawn characters, excellent metaphorical conflict (as well as straight-up literal conflict!), and descriptive, error-free writing. I have to note that generally in ARCs there are a noticeable amount of typos, spelling and grammatical errors, and continuity issues. I found none, NONE, in this manuscript. Both Card and his editor are to be highly commended. The story follows Danny, a gatemage, as he figures out what that means and grows his powers. The central conflict comes from the fact that since Loki closed all the gates 1300 years ago, no gatemages have been allowed to live. This also means there's not much of a teacher to be had so Danny can learn to develop his abilities. Danny is on the run, but manages to encounter people willing to help him, even though he is a careless, bratty kid. His argument that that's all part of being a gatemage is especially entertaining. Gatemages have always been tricksters and prankers, but Danny genuinely seems to have his heart in the right place, as well as wanting to have a little fun. I very much enjoyed his foray into High School, and would have loved to have seen that go on longer. In addition to Danny's story is that of Wad, a boy who emerges from a tree, not remembering much about who he is and how he got there. His exploits in the land of Iceway, in Westil (where these mages are --probably-- originally from), are interspersed throughout, and while the reader has some idea of who Wad might originally have been, Card keeps one guessing! The final conflict is well resolved, yet still leaves an opening for sequels. I have to note, too, that this world Card has created does a fantastic job of explaining and encompassing all kinds of magical phenomena including the mythical gods of yore; ghosts, werewolves and other paranormal creatures, and things generally attributed to "aliens." I have been a fan of this writer for years, and will be for many more. My only lament is that with this book 33 years in the making, I may have to wait a while to find out what happens to Danny and his friends!
