What a great book to finish up a series. I am a total sucker for Faerie books. Especially when they involve the different kingdoms of the Summer Queen, the Winter King, Mabh and of course Puck/Robin Goodfellow. I think that Lesley Livingston writes in such a way that you can visualise the characters and the setting and are whisked into the world of the Fey and I would be lying if I said that I didn't wish that I was a fairy princess, with purple wings, kicking some butt and kissing Sonny Flannery...just saying! If you like stories of the Fair folk, then you should definitely give this series a go.

I really enjoy Ann Patchett's writing. This is an incredible book about family set during a snowstorm in Boston. I read it while sick at home in bed.

Geez, what did I learn from this book? Um, it is possible to teach, have several romantic affairs, write several books/articles, write letters daily, travel on a regular basis, and maintain a sense of equilibrium. Simone is a hero. One of the cute things to read is her constant reference to Sartre as "diminutive being" or "little one." She writes daily events vividly and candidly. Let me find an example.... "My heart's so full this evening I'm on the verge of tears. It has been snowing over Paris since morning and, as there are no taxis or other vehicles, the snow has remained on the streets. Everything's as white and silent as the middle of the countryside, with a grey winter-sports sky..." The most interesting part of the letters occurs when Sartre is a prisoner in jail. She writes daily for several months without knowing his whereabouts. In this time she ponders her safe life in Paris and reports on all the details of her day. The amount of dedication to one another is touching. Also, she has all sorts of asides about feeling "useless" in war. I hear that shit! At last, some of her letters describe her relationship to Mr. Algren, a writer in Chicago. It was neat to see how much of her real life is put inside "The Mandarins." Their fights and travels in Mexico are documented in these letters and the novel.

“I believe that we should read only those book that bite and sting us. If a book we are reading does not rouse us with a blow to the head, then why read it? Because it will make us happy, you tell me? My God, we would also be happy if we had no books, and the books that make us happy we could, if necessary, write ourselves. What we need are books that affect us like some really grievous misfortune, like the death of one whom we loved more than ourselves, as if we were banished to distant forests, away from everybody, like a suicide; a book must be the ax for the frozen sea within us." -Franz Kafka And what a powerful ax A Clockwork Orange is.

My daughter, Caroline, lent this to me. On her recommendation, I read it and enjoyed it. It definitely drew me in and it was a quick read, my bedtime reading for three or four evenings.

This is beyond a doubt the very first book I read in 2005, since I finished it at about five in the morning on New Year's Day. It's very much standard Christie fare - the kind of book you can read without terribly much concentration. It's not one of her better works (though I don't think any of them will ever equal The Murder of Roger Akroyd for me), but it definitely features a lot of her standard features - a wealthy woman surrounded by a large number heirs who all have their reasons for doing away with her; a large and somewhat dilapidated country house; a slightly Gothic murder scene; and Miss Marple solving the crime thanks to her understanding of human nature. I'd figured out whodunnit by about five chapters in it, but Christie always reaches her denouement with such class that it hardly matters.

Oh good, the latest Stephen Carter novel, in my bookbag. Before I take it out, I hereby pledge to my goodreads brethren that I, Rebecca Feind, do seriously mean it when I say I am going to try not to gobble this book, not to read 'til my eyes hurt, but to actually incorporate the practice of using a bookmark instead of reading until the end of a chapter. Update: I did, as pledged above, read slowly, reining in my tendency to skim when I want to plunge deeper into the narrative. Carter's novels are very satisfying--enough intrigue, heartbreak, and unrequited love to keep you turning the pages at a rapid rate.

Despite some misgivings I had while reading the book, such as the fact that I felt the author was trying to mimic the magic of the character from Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and that the tragedy-tie between the Dresden bombings and 9-11 were too contrived, I liked this book. It made me sad, it made me laugh and it entertained me. I read it for book club and I started late so I had little time to finish. It kept my attention well enough that I finished in just a few days.
