Alexis Q _lexis_u — Geez, what did I learn from this book? Um, it is possible to teach, have several romantic affairs, write several books/articles, write letters daily, travel on a regular basis, and maintain a sense of equilibrium. Simone is a hero. One of the cute things to read is her constant reference to Sartre as "diminutive being" or "little one." She writes daily events vividly and candidly. Let me find an example.... "My heart's so full this evening I'm on the verge of tears. It has been snowing over Paris since morning and, as there are no taxis or other vehicles, the snow has remained on the streets. Everything's as white and silent as the middle of the countryside, with a grey winter-sports sky..." The most interesting part of the letters occurs when Sartre is a prisoner in jail. She writes daily for several months without knowing his whereabouts. In this time she ponders her safe life in Paris and reports on all the details of her day. The amount of dedication to one another is touching. Also, she has all sorts of asides about feeling "useless" in war. I hear that shit! At last, some of her letters describe her relationship to Mr. Algren, a writer in Chicago. It was neat to see how much of her real life is put inside "The Mandarins." Their fights and travels in Mexico are documented in these letters and the novel.

Christoph Damm dcdammchri0294 — I probably won't write reviews on every single book in this series but I do plan on reading them all! They're just so much fun. L.A. Meyer has basically created a female version of Tom Sawyer in Jacky Faber, so how can you go wrong with that? Sure, some of you readers will be disappointed in the writing style or unable to suspend your disbelief at the exaggerated, sharp wit and intellect Jacky possesses. Too bad for you! If you can't look past some of the technical aspects of the books, you're missing out on some great storytelling and good ol' adventure. I'm halfway through book #3 and still as entertained as when I picked up book #1. On a critical note, there are some innuendos and sexual references (even though the actual act never seems to happen) that are used to move the story along so, even though these are YA books, I probably wouldn't want my 14- or 15-yr-olds reading them.

Jake White jakepaulwhite — A bewitching story about the women in the 'Sparrow' family. Each woman is born in the month of March and upon turning 13 years of age, they discover which unusual "gift" they have been given. From back cover: "The women of the Sparrow family have lived in New England for generations. Each is born in the month of March, and at the age of thirteen, each develops an unusual gift. Elinor can literally smell a lie. Her daughter, Jenny, can see people's dreams as they're dreaming them. Granddaughter Stella, newly a teen, has just developed the ability to see how other people will die. Ironically, it is their gifts that have kept Elinor and Jenny apart for the last twenty-five years. But as Stella struggles to cope with her disturbing clairvoyance, the unthinkable happens: One of her premonitions lands her father in jail, wrongly accused of homicide. The ordeal leads Stella to the grandmother she's never met and to Cake House, the Sparrow ancestral home, full of talismans and fraught with history. Now three generations of estranged Sparrow women must come together to turn Stella's potential to ruin into a potential to redeem."
