I'm not going to lie, I didn't even finish it. In fact it was about as boring as reading the Internal Revenue Code. I didn't feel a connection with the characters. The main character presses the same tired issues throughout the book and the plot drags along. Take my words with a grain of salt because I definitely go against the grain when is comes to book reviews and public opinion, though.

I paid full price at Borders for the hardback version of The Wall by Jeff Long. For me that is really saying something. I've written about Jeff Long before, especially about the wonderful scary book The Descent, which by the way the movie sucks and isn't anything like the book. I like Jeff Long like I like Robert Ludlum. I pretty much read everything they write and like it. I think that over the years Long has worked on his craft and gotten better and better at writing. I started reading him because of his ties to rock climbing and mountaineering. I continue to like him for the same reason, but I always enjoy his books and his writing. The Wall takes place in Yosemite. Think of it as The Descent on crack (get it). It's not the great thriller that the Descent is, or the story that Angels of Light is. But it's a good quick thriller that is different than all the rest that's out there. It might give you a shiver or two. Or make you think twice about that big wall climb. But I think you'll enjoy it.

What is is about New Orleans that every author seems to think supernaturals love to live there? This book is no different. Jane Yellowrock is hired by the Vampire Council to kill a rogue vampire who is drawing unwanted attention in New Orleans. He is killing indiscriminately, both humans and other vampires. Jane is a skinwalker, a supernatural that exists in much of Native American lore. She is able to adapt her form to any animal she has sufficient contact with to know its DNA. She is most comfortable as a mountain lion, but can absorb mass from the earth and become something larger, or send mass into the earth and become something smaller. This is an interesting take on the physics principle of conservation of mass, a conflict that has always bothered me about other skinwalker stories. As Jane investigates, in both her guises, she learns much more about her own past, something that has been hidden from her previously; her memories were not intact. She meets a Cherokee shaman, who is able to help her uncover her past life as both a human and an animal. If you love kick-ass heroines, Jane will make you happy. She doesn't need a man around and even has to rescue several during her adventures in New Orleans. A very promising debut.

This has been my "fall asleep" book for about a week. While it could have been easily devoured in a single sitting - I am glad that I was able to enjoy it over many nights. A twist on the "Jungle Book" a young boy is raised by the inhabitants of an English graveyard. The chapters tell the adventures of Nobody "Bod" Owens as he grows from a toddler until his teens. Each chapter stands alone as a short story, but they weave together well to tell the story of Bods first 15 years. It was a great read for both adults and older children alike.
