** spoiler alert ** After reading -My Sister's Keeper-, I had high hopes for this book and wasn't disappointed. It is amazing to me how the author manages to write such long novels that I read so quickly. Yet again, I simply couldn't put the book down. This author seems to favor moving around between different voices and different times, something which definitely helps to keep my interest. I also appriciate the fact the approaches sensitive/taboo subjects that I find myself pondering long after I've finished the novel. I think she fleshed the characters out well and generated sympathy for just about every one of them. ***SPOILER ALERT*** My only complaint is with the very end as I had a hard time beliving the jury's decision. Perhaps, if the author had taken us into the deliberation room and described some of the discussion, then perhaps I could have found it more believable. The ending as itis presented is a sweet, sentimental one, but I couldn't buy it. Even a hung jury would have been more believable. I suppose that is my one complaint with Picoult, she touches on some really incredibly interesting ideas, prompting great discussion, but then she seems to take the easy out, seemingly unwilling to take a stand one way or the other

The Bridge on the Drina is a historical novel that tells the story of a small town in Bosnia and the bridge that defines its identity. It includes a number of vignettes over the course of several centuries from the building of the bridge in the sixteenth century to World War I. Some of the stories are quite interesting, others not so much. Overall I found the book to be very educational in terms of learning about the history of Bosnia but it got difficult to get through in the end due to the slow pace.

Absolutely Fabulous! This book is just amazing. The history of the world compacted into one book might appear, at first, to trivialize many things. That might be a turn off- who wants to be enchanted by false truths or annoying generalizations and stereotypes? But, this book takes a look at the bigger picture of the world as it progresses from the Fertile Crescent to what we have today... how some societies becamse so strong as to overtake others, while the others seemed to have remained in the stone age. Such fascinating stuff, I think this book at least gives a foundation for understanding human survival, the development of states and organization, and why societies are the way they are now. I love things with a deep cultural perspective, and I think this book is excellent at driving through stereotypes and with providing bits of knowledge that make me think. The bibliography is ridiculously extensive, the research for this book must have taken a lifetime. I truly enjoyed this book. And I think anyone with an interest in human societies, and even the world today would agree that this book is amazing.
