As always, Carriger delivers a witty, fast paced romp through her world. The ending did not disappoint. I cannot wait for the teenaged Prudence or whatever name she chooses to be unleashed on London for her Season.

A book that had some twists in unexpected places, and that should really make people think.

Read the full review on my blog The Ultimate Book Nook excerpt: I think it is a good thing I gave this book another read through. There is so much going on in the plot that I don't think I could have possibly taken in all of it. There are so many different gods to keep up with, symbolism to absorb and, once again I will say, the wonderful writing (I'm done now, I promise). I loved the mythology. I have always been interested in it. The way Gaiman presents it, though, is so intriguing, introducing you to all these gods in flashback and showing the different cultures they come from. Shadow is so likable, too. he gets frustrating at times but he is just a big lug you can't help but love. The story gets dark and creepy at times and there are quite a few NC17 scenes (maybe even R) but that just adds to allure of the book. It gives you so much to think about, too. Society and it's values are put into question. Have we really stopped believing in gods of our ancestors and started worshiping, instead, modern technology and science? That may be an easy question to answer now, but read the book and learn more. It is truly thought provoking.

Somehow this book was in the jail library at the same time that I was doing a two month stretch for ... that's not important. I remember lying in my bunk, reading this between naps, and dreaming about it. I'm pretty sure I was obsessed with his story, his trial, his imprisonment, and the eventual appearance of the guillotine character. Amazing. The man was sentenced to death because he didn't get along with his mother. And the machine of death, the guillotine, wow. I was transfixed with the parallels and somehow took copious jailhouse notes on the philosophical and symbolic of the story Camus had woven. I only gave it four stars because the translation, in the beginning, left something to be desired, although, it felt appropriate so I wouldn't change a thing.

This is one of my favorite books, but who really cares? I have to say that M Night Shyamalan's Signs owes a little to this book, in that at heart, Irving's book is about an alien invasion that is thwarted by mundane talents/quirks. Also, I LOVE stuttering holy men.

I was so excited to pick this book up! Three main reasons for that: 1. Lots of buzz from other bloggers including those who don't normally read much contemporary; 2. the fact that I do read a good amount of contemporary and have a special soft spot for it; and 3. I have read and loved a lot of HarlequinTeen books lately and I think they are just hitting it out of the ballpark with their lists of books. But I was also nervous because it seems like heavily hyped books tend to let me down...what would be the case for Pushing the Limits? As it turns out, I am not one of the people who will gush over this book: not because it was bad or because I didn't like it. It has a lot of good points and I am comfortable giving it four stars. But it is very much not my kind of story. There is drama on top of drama on top of more drama with little humor to lighten the plot and lift my spirits. I mean, so much drama! One of our narrators (did I mention this was dually narrated between the lead characters? That was a definite plus for me-I love multiple narrators!) is Echo, former popular girl who lost her status following the news of the death of her brother in Afghanistan and then a night she can't remember but that resulted in serious scars on her arms and a restraining order against her mother. The other narrator is bad boy Noah, orphan, druggie, and foster kid who is trying to fight the system to gain custody of his two younger brothers. Now that is a lot to take in, right? But it's only a snippet of the drama these two go through. Every time I thought they might catch a break, something else had to break. It added layers and ratcheted up the intensity of their circumstances but it ended up feeling too much for me. I know some people love these melodramatic romantic contemporaries but I'm not one of those people. If you are that kind of person, then I definitely recommend this for you! Another thing is that while I liked the two narrators, I didn't love them. My love is reserved for supporting characters Mrs. Collins, the slightly off-beat school psychiatrist who just might be an adult they can trust; Isaiah and Beth, Noah's two friends who have been as battered by the foster care system as him; and Lila, a true friend to Echo. In fact, one of my favorite parts of this reading experience ended up being the sneak peek at a companion novel following Beth due in 2013; I can't wait for that! Overall: A strong contemporary if heavy on the drama and light on the comedy. Cover: Love Echo's hair-very true to the story. Personally I don't think the cover is very dynamic but it suggests a contemporary love story.

This book weaves together several stories seamlessly for the first 9/10ths of the book. While in the end, the denouement seems a bit forced - like Ishiguro ran out of steam or time or publisher page limits - he maintains a flawless evenness of tone and sentiment throughout the book. It's full of great characterizations and plot development. I only wish it had ended with more fulfillment. Read more of my reviews at www.andilit.com

I loved this book. It's been quite a while since I literally couldn't put a book down, but I was reluctant to go to sleep -- I just wanted to finish it. In essence it is a dark tale, with quite a few twists and turns. Some that do actually keep you guessing. I adore the explanation/details of the soul screamers/banshees and can't wait to read more in this series!

My favourite SK book is "The Stand", which is a completely different story to UTD, but has a similar theme. Some sort of invisible but inpenetrable dome is placed over a small town in Maine (duh), cutting its residents off from the outside world. This isolation brings out the best and worst in various sections of the townsfolk and reminded me in some ways of "Lord of the Flies". The characters are well drawn as usual, and the reader gets a real feel of what drives them on. Despite its 880 pages, the story flies along and there's never a dull moment. I'm not crazy about all of SK's novels, but I think he excels when he writes with an armageddon theme. UTD is not the masterpiece that The Stand was, but if you're a fan of SK and enjoyed The Stand, it's likely you'll enjoy this too.
