Simon Goez cultsoftheshadow — My favourite SK book is "The Stand", which is a completely different story to UTD, but has a similar theme. Some sort of invisible but inpenetrable dome is placed over a small town in Maine (duh), cutting its residents off from the outside world. This isolation brings out the best and worst in various sections of the townsfolk and reminded me in some ways of "Lord of the Flies". The characters are well drawn as usual, and the reader gets a real feel of what drives them on. Despite its 880 pages, the story flies along and there's never a dull moment. I'm not crazy about all of SK's novels, but I think he excels when he writes with an armageddon theme. UTD is not the masterpiece that The Stand was, but if you're a fan of SK and enjoyed The Stand, it's likely you'll enjoy this too.

Zen Rahmoun gazman — This was a compelling book to read. Initially the mystery of the murder of a young man draws one into the plot, but that murder is rather quickly made secondary to the mysteries of the community during WWII, communism and the later labor movement. The descriptions of the forest and fields, of farming and the weather are all beautiful. I found it difficult to keep track of the many characters introduced early in the book, so many had similarly difficult (Polish) names. It also took a little while for me to get the rhythm of the writing, which at least initially felt choppy to me. Those hurdles were well worth jumping over, this is a book I will be recommending to friends and relations.

Kumamoto Native freebiesc63e — An intriguing story of a boy named Rigg who is a trapper, but after the death of his father (happens in first chapter, so not really a spoiler), learns that his life's journey is much more than he thought at first. I really enjoyed the "pathfinder" descriptions--they were by far the most compelling aspect of the story. The time travel portions started to become more clear, but were quite convoluted in the beginning. I laughed when I read the author's notes at the end where Card says that it took several drafts and several readers for him to get them cleared up for himself.
