Honestly, I think the series should have ended with book eight. I enjoyed the series but it's just gone on too long. I don't mean to insult Shepard, her books or her fans, but there's only so much you can do with a series like PLL while keeping it good.

This is the 6th book in the Challis/Destry Australian (Victorian Mornington Peninsula) police procedural mysteries and a time in a book series when many authors start to run out of steam. Not so Garry Disher. In fact, in my opinion, this is the best book of the series thus far. Disher keeps his books fresh by rotating around the main characters from one novel to the next. This time Ellen Destry is overseas on a study trip and plays virtually no role in the story apart from an occasional skype conversation. In her absence, Inspector Challis is the main protagonist and Constable Pam Murphy emerges as an interesting, astute and very able sidekick. As is customary with Garry Disher, the plot is multi-pronged, well researched and ties together like binder-twine. I also enjoy the characterisation. There are no 'larger than life' James Bonds or Dirk Pitts working at Waterloo Police Station. The police department is under-funded and undermanned. The characters that inhabit the station make mistakes, have diverse private lives, are battling their own personal demons and are fleshed out brilliantly by Garry Disher to make them interesting to the reader and durable enough to last multiple books. If you have never read a police procedural novel before, then this is a great place to start, and despite being number 6 in the series, it is a standalone book (but read the others anyway!). Another wonderfully enjoyable crime fiction novel with absorbing and interesting characters by Australian author Garry Disher.

Maybe I just set my expectations too high but I was disappointed by the book. I think I was looking for another Red Tent and this book just isn't it. How many period stories can you read? Most of the stories were just ho-hum and the editor didn't choose stories from a broad enough sample of people. The stories all blended into one for me. Oh well, you win some, you lose some.

This was sort of lovely and beautiful, though not particularly suspenseful or compelling. I think it almost would have worked better as a short story. I did enjoy it, though I agree w cassi that the epilogue was dumb. It was unnecessary too. Looking forward to discussing!

This book had a bit of a slow start, but even from the beginning the mystery of this story is set. If you think this is a spin off of The Secret Garden you are wrong. The only similarities with "The Secret Garden" are a few of the character names that both books share, and orphan going to live in a large house with a crippled uncle (kind of a creepy crippled uncle if you ask me), and a beautiful garden, but that's about it. The story is told from 3 women from different time periods. There's Eliza in the early 1900's, then Nell in the 1970's, then Cassandra in 2005. The whole story is one big mystery which is what is so exciting about it. Throughout the story I thought I had solved the mystery a few times. I was right in somethings ( the big one), but wrong on the stuff in between getting to the resolution. About half way through it really picks up, and I literally could not put it down. I loved the fairy tales in between, they do tell a story and are part of solving the mystery of Nell's forgotten past. Don't skip over those. Loved Eliza's character though her life is a little sad and tragic. Very good haunting, and mysterious read.
