I had a hard time reading this but everyone else in my bookclub really liked it. I had a hard time with the characters and just did not find that I connected with them, the landscape or the drama. However others raved about the book. so if you are looking for a book club book that will inspire discussion, this may be the one for you.

Zusak knows how to craft good sentences, and the overall idea is a good one, but The Book Thief is a 550-page book that's 200 pages too long. He gets carried away with his own lyricism, and the pace sags. There's too much description and too many overwrought analogies: "Mamer was a barrel of a man, with two small bullet holes to look out of. His teeth were like a soccer crowd, crammed in." Every page is packed with these kind of all-over-the-place comparisons. There are a number that jump out as truly gorgeous, but an editor should have helped Zusak cut the rest and stick to the story. By page 300, I had to force myself to keep going and by the end, I felt I'd completed a marathon. The writing, in the end, kept me from enjoying the story.
