It was good but I didn't care for the writing that much. Historical information was very interesting. It was good comparing the only things I know about polygamy from "Big Love" on TV to this book. The newspapers gave a little information when recently Texas decided to arrest the "Firsts" and take away the children for a while. I don't know what the end outcome was. Any comments?

I loved the female character in this book. I know the insecurities someone can feel over their body shape. It was nice to see her so happy and have Vane love her for who she is. It was really endearing. I loved their story.

Oy vey, zombies. Perhaps they are a metaphor for bacteria or viruses, but they make for incredibly unsophisticated opponents. I didn't care for this book, but I can see why teens who recommended it to me would gravitate towards it. The adults in the story are all oppressive and wrong and withhold information -- if the teens in the story withhold information that's different because they have a good reason. The main character feels entitled to have whatever she wants no matter whom she hurts to get it or the consequences to her entire village, and, of course, there is the creed that dreams are worth dying for even if it's a death involving being ripped apart by zombies. Then there's the several arguments between the main character and the other teenage characters about "You don't know what love is. No, you don't know what love is." And as evident by the audiobook, many of the conversations between the teen characters are yelled.

Well, I finally found the time to actually finish a book - summer must be approaching! This book was turned into a movie that a friend of mine suggested we see, and the movie was cute but I felt a lot was missing, and was excited to see it was based on a book - generally that means that the book itself is a good read and most probably better than the movie. Sure enough - the writing is quite good (though there are whole passages where I'm surprised that the same clever author then breaks so many basic rules of fiction... not sure why he got away with that)and the premise most interesting - a man who is for a variety of reasons incapable of sustaining a relationship has a turbulent experience in psychoanalysis which seems to only aggravate him further but might in fact be empowering him - very clever and very Freudian (as a warning ... ) but I imagine anyone in 'the business' would appreciate this book. It wasn't a perfect read by any stretch but certainly after watching the movie it was a big step up.

Is unrequited love resolved with patience? I am still left wondering.

Reading other reviews, people seem to either love or hate this book. I am one of the ones who loved it! It's a quick read because I just couldn't put it down. Now there are a few bits that are rough around the edges, but in the main it's an unusual psychological thriller. Danielle is a single parent to Max, who has Asperger's Syndrome. At sixteen he is getting worse, and she checks him into a renowned psychiatric unit for short term assessment. However, within a few days he is accused of the brutal, and bloody murder of a young fellow patient. Saving Max brings up all sorts of issues, and would make a great book group book for discussion. How far do you go to protect your child? Can you hand on heart say "My child didn't do this" when your child is mentally sick and in a psychotic break? Can you trust an institution just because the medical staff seem so well qualified? Can you trust the justice system to get to the truth when judicial rulings can seem so random? Can other people present a mask to you that is so good that you never can see the reality beneath? And just how far would you go against the system before you caved in? My tiny negatives are nothing against the pluses in this book. Why call the Head Nurse by the name of Kreng. "Nurse Kreng" just smacks of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest". And why did we have a random character such as Naomi? I felt that she was put in just to muddy the waters. Also there were a couple of occasions when I felt that the author had Danielle do something that I felt was unbelievable. It seemed as if she couldn't think of any other way to move the plot along with the next bit of information. Having said that, I thoroughly enjoyed the book. It was fast paced and interesting, and I look forward to reading the next book by this author.

Okay. Two important things to remember before starting this book, or even while reading it. 1. It is a fiction novel. 2. However, there are some facts within it. That being said, if you are very religious, by way of christianity, particularly catholic, you possibly may not enjoy this book. But I hope that everyone can appreciate it as it's intended to be: a great escape.

At first I was laughing a lot - I worked for a large corporation and occasionally had too much time on my hands, so reading this made me laugh with recognition, and feel a little less guilty for my low productivity moments. But now I'm about a quarter of the way in and I keep wondering if anything is going to happen. Does the "We" carry through the whole book? I feel like for the "we" to not be gimmicky, something good better be coming...
