Must Read - 3 Meaningful - 3 "For a few moments we discover that nothing can be taken for granted, for if this ring of stone is marvelous then all which shaped it is marvelous, and our journey here on earth, able to see and touch and hear in the midst of tangible and mysterious things-in-themselves, is the most strange and daring of all adventures." - p. 45 And I whole-heartedly endorse his radical recommendations for our national park system that begins on page 65.

This MINI review can also be found at The Starry-Eyed Revue. I think I had some seriously misplaced expectations for this story, based on the author's previous work -- I've read The Replacement and her short stories on Merry Sisters of Fate -- but even so, it held my interest. I also think that it's been awhile since I read that synopsis and added this book to my TBR because I'm only now just putting the title and premise together and seeing how it fits. Oh, well. The fact that Hannah can see ghosts, especially the ghosts of the Valentine Killer murder victims, intrigued me to no end, but I still really would have liked to know why she could see them. I don't take a lot of things on faith, and so I spent a substantial amount of time looking for answers to that question rather than on who the serial killer was and what their motivation was. I just knew that I hoped it wasn't Finny Boone. I love an awkward romance that makes little sense to everyone else. This is one of those cases. It reminded me a lot of Kiri and Skunk in Wild Awake honestly. And I rooted for it, even when the characters themselves weren't sure. It was just sweet and the way Finny and Hannah were both so protective of each other melted my heart a bit. Obviously, this was not a murder-kill-stab bloody gore-fest, or anything, and it didn't really delve into the psyche of a serial killer, either. Instead, it was a kind of sweet story about friendship and deceptive appearances in a town with a serial killer on the loose. And I kinda liked it. Makes me want to get to my copy of The Space Between that much sooner. GIF it to me straight: Weird...but delightfully so.

Ramona loves these books, and they have helped her learn some body parts. I love the colors in the artwork, but the gigantic heads with little eyes on the kids aren't appealing to look at. (Don't cartoons usually exaggerate the eyes to make characters endearing?) The books are pretty sturdy as well; only two ripped off flaps in 3 books. Not bad!

This story is about twin daughters of interracial parents. Minnie and Keira are eleven year olds with different skin tones and personalities. It is not until their African American grandmother from Georgia enters them in a Miss Black Pearl Pre-teen competition that Minnie realizes what life is like for her sister in their small town in the Pacific Northwest. Keira has darker skin and is very outgoing unlike her twin, Minnie. Good book for sisters, interracial realationships, grandmothers, competitions, family love and support

Donald Barthelme is pretty consistently structurally playful and silly, but also consistently trying to write humanity, and does so surprisingly well without dropping the smile. I prefer The Dead Father to this one -- while both share his sexual frankness, absurdity, fracture and (sometimes anyway) opacity of language, Dead Father moved more. Snow White is fun and youthful, but less pointed. Which is to say, I'm turning into an old man, who demands weight even of his Barhtelme. Having said all that, I still give it 4 stars; a lesser work by a great writer still outshines the best works by poorer writers, and page by page and sentence by sentence this was delight enough for me.

quirky, interesting characters. a story about the contestants on a reality show ('amazing race'- esque). Most interesting couple is a formerly gay man and woman who have tried to denounce their ways and become straight together. A really good read.

Interesting and funny book about the development of the English language and its many dialects and varieties. I have a weakness for the subject, but still - it's good.

This is a great book. Apparently it was a movie with Patty Duke! It was pretty cool. The premise is there's this ugly Jewish girl who needs a nose job. She can't get a date and her parents are trying to set her up with guys, so she leaves home in Brooklyn and gets a room in the Village. Here she finds acceptance among all the kooky queers and artists. It is a true timepiece. 1969, the year of the Stonewall riots. And her acceptance of gays is unquestioning. And drugs and stripping and birth control and gangs are just a part of life too. My kinda book. Unfortunately she turns out to be straight and sleeps with an artist, when it's obvious the real story should be she goes to the Village to discover herself as a lesbian. But it was a movie with Patty Duke, so they couldn't do that. It has to be squeaky clean in its warped, 1969 kinda way.

Now THIS book by Lewis I actually remember reading (while my friend Rene was taking flying lessons at the Santo Domingo airport) in 10th grade (age 15). It was wonderful for me then, when I was questioning so much about the religious world of protestant/evangelical Christianity I was completely immersed in to that point in my life.
