This book is about a racially mixed family growing up during the civil rights era. The parents share a love of music which becomes the foundation of this family of extraordinarily (musically) gifted children. Despite their talents, they face discrimination throughout their lives and struggle to make sense of the world they live in. The book is profound and enlightening and not one I will forget. It was a bit difficult to concentrate in places when the descriptions of the music and its effects are beyond my limited musical knowledge, but very interesting to view those years through the eyes of people whose lives were so very different from mine.

Really cute book with a fun story! I would have loved it as a kid and appreciated its non-formulaic approach as an adult. The sibling rivalry is a little intense, but makes a good story and I'm sure lots of kids can relate. Hopefully the sisters in the book can find some good in each other. Great tale about friendship and giving someone a chance. But where are books like this for boys?? Right now I have a beginning reader and anything I can find that isn't completely repetitive is about girls...
