I just didn't like this book. Too long, disorganized, too many characters....

An international flight from Hong Kong to Denver experiences a phenomenon that leaves 3 dead and 52 injured. What happened? Although the technical information was new and interesting, and Casey is a compelling character, this book was not terribly entertaining. Besides Casey, people did not have credible motives for doing the things they did. The plot didn't really add up and the big 'reveal' was something I figured out about halfway through. Accurate portrayal of the media as fear mongers and not interested in the truth but what plays well as a visual was refreshing. A lot of the technical jargon was mystifying and the explanations for it were either non-existant, or unnecessary. I mean, times that I probably could have figured it out myself, there was an awkward interjection of explanation, and there was never an explanation when I was mystified. Also included were many lines of reports in binary that really seemed to just fill pages. I will always keep an eye on the slats on all future airplane rides...

"It was love at first sight, at last sight, at ever and ever sight." (p. 307) What is there to say about Lolita that hasn't already been said hundreds of times over? Yes, the content is disturbing and occasionally brutally uncomfortable to read, but I'd be lying if I said I could look away. I couldn't. "And I shall be dumped where the weed decays, and the rest is rust and stardust". (p. 292) In fact, more than a handful of times I found myself rereading whole paragraphs, sometimes pages, two, three or even four times. Such is the absolute beauty of Nabokov's use of the english language. Never before have I read a book so gorgeously written, so witty, so breathtakingly lyrical. Midway through I started to mark pages containing a particularly striking quote with mini post-it notes. "A shipwreck. An atoll. Alone with a drowned passenger's shivering child. Darling, this is only a game!" (p. 19) Certainly I'll be rereading this again many times over, not only to study Humbert Humbert's tragic affection for nymphet Lolita, but primarily to linger over Nabokov's majestic prose. As an aspiring author it makes me slightly distressed to know I'll never paint a novel even 1/1000 as eloquently as this.

Hemingway is best in small doses. His short stories are much more effective than his long novels, and play to the strengths of his writing style.
This was a free download on the Kindle, so I thought why not? It was better than I expected. It seemed a little bit of a "knockoff" to me of Julie & Julia (I have only seen the movie, not yet read the book, so take that lightly). But it was pretty funny.

This book first caught my attention when it got on the finalist of the Lambda Literery Awards in the transgender category. Then, Cheryl Morgan mentioned it on her blog and then I realized it was published by Seven Stories. Have I ever mentioned how much I like this publisher? If you haven't already done so, you should definitely check out their catalog. They're doing some wonderful work. Anyway, when a single book keeps popping up, it usually means something, so I decided it was about time I ordered it. According to the publisher's info, this book is aimed at children aged 4 to 8. I would definitely want my kids to read this if I had any. We need more books like this one. Book premise: every night, Bailey dreams of wearing dresses but when Bailey wakes up and asks for a dress, the answer is always: "Boys don't wear dresses !" I found that the most interesting element of the narration was the inner dialog and the way in which Bailey is refered to as female through various pronouns and only considered as a boy on the outside and thus, refered to as male by her family. This introduces the idea of a double identity as well as the notion that one's body does not necessarily define one's identity. This children book brings forth complex and delicate questions about identity and perception in a very simple way, allowing its adult reader to realize that things aren't so complicated after all: deep down inside, we know who we are and we should just stick to that and allow others to do the same. Simple, right? About the art, I really like Ray's mosaic and almost patchwork-like illustrations. Sure, it does give a child-like stamp to the story but it also smartly echoes the notion of a plural identity constantly int he making. All in all, it's a wonderful book for both children and adults and I wish there wasn't such a debate around its publication what with people calling it "inappropriate" when clearly the only thing that is "inappropriate" is their own reaction.
