LOVE, LOVE, LOVED this! As usual, de Botton's insights are right on. Why are British men so smart anyway? :)

This book is a true representation of Russia during the Communism reign. I went to Leningrad and Moscow on a school tour in 1981 and reading this book flooded my mind with memories. Leningrad is described exactly like I remember it. The chandeliers in the underground Metro station, the line-ups on the streets, the crazy line-ups in the stores which stock nothing, right down to the foil wrapping on the chocolate bars. A great book to get a feel for Russia in the time preceding the fall of Communism, a country that is dear to my heart.

Very silly! Grumpy guy changes his ways. Personally, I still hate squirrels with the heat of a thousand suns, but this book is very good.

This is a remarkable book. I believe, especially for members of Congress and the White House, that they need to read this more than ever. We were given this country because of the due diligence our Founding Fathers went through in creating the Constitution and Bill of Rights. This nation especially its elected leaders need to get back to the basics which this book outlines to restore the greatness of the USA. I know that if every citizen were to read this and take the outline and live by it this nation would achieve not only for itself but the entire world as our fore fathers saw. Encourage everyone to read this book

3.5 stars I listened to this as I spent the day cleaning, and it made the day go by so pleasantly! :) Listening to it was really enjoyable. Yet it certainly is lacking in the attention to detail that would make this a truly full-bodied story. It does end up feeling like listening to 9 hours of gossip about a handful of characters, some of which I didn't like at all. But I did like two of them, and so was quite content listening to their stories. The series seems well-suited to the audiobook format, and I look forward to many days filled with the simultaneous satisfaction of a productive day of cleaning and of immersion in a book. Update: 4 stars I started the second on in the series, in print, and in doing so, realized that part of the seeming lack of detail I thought I noticed in the first may have been due to my not paying perfect attention to the narrator at all times. I like her style more when I read it on the page! (But they're still great audiobooks.) :)

I had read so many great things about this book, and I saw it in a used book store, so I bought it. I really didn't enjoy it.

2.5 actually because some things are left unsaid, like why Dee hates Julian so much.

A Gothic thriller set in the 1840s on a Hudson River estate. An oldie, but still quite readable.

Excellent...mainly because I idealize those 'good ole days' where life was (in theory) simple and prosperity was usually measured by the sweat of the brow.

An honest-to-god ***** book. Slim but resonant and haunting. Casares writes with shades of Borges, grim humor, and a pretty brilliant speculative imagination. Absolutely recommended. NYRB Classics is just off the hook.
