Although she, along with her mother, are shunned by their neighbors because she is illegitimate, fourteen-year-old Pen Downing is happy with her life in the English countryside in 1627. But her life falls apart when her mother drowns and Pen is sent to live with a couple who work her hard and take all her possessions. Desperate to be free of them, she runs away to London, hoping to make a living there. But on her very first day in the city, she is alone and bewildered. However, she is able to join a group of orphan children fighting for survival on the streets. The children are like a family, and though their existence is bare, they do manage to get by. It doesn't last very long, however. Pen and the others are abducted, and after a grueling stay in prison, herded like cattle onto a ship bound for the Virginia colony. The journey is miserable, and many die. But life for those that survive may be worse - they will have to survive seven years of servitude as bound servants once they arrive. Pen and one of the other girls, Rose, are fortunate to end up in a fairly good position, and Pen slowly adjusts to life in Virginia. But her other friends aren't as fortunate, and long to escape. And soon Pen will have to make a choice where she stands. I highly recommend this novel to fans of historical fiction. A similiar title I would recommend is A Stolen Life by Jane Louise Curry. It is set about a hundred years after this book, but it also tells of a young teenage girl sent against her will to be a servant in the colonies.

I really enjoyed this book. It is very true to reality in the small towns in Utah that I have "lived" in. The way the Mormon's are shown is pretty funny, and accurate for some, in some small towns. It was an easy read, and had lots of good points about life lessons. There is a bit of Mormon bashing, and some swearing, but it's all done, in my opinion, in good taste. I would recommend reading this book to learn about life in rural Utah, as well as live a cowboy fantasy of your own.

** spoiler alert ** Frustrating! I can honestly say that I don't think I actually like these characters. Eugenie's choice in men is horrific. Dorian seems to genuinely love Eugenie, but he wants to the prophecy to come true. Kiyo also seems to love Eugenie, but will do anything for the prophecy to not come true. Both of their wills and desires are stronger than their love of Eugenie. Yes, Dorian lied to Eugenie, but that was not an excuse for her to cheat on Dorian which is exactly what she did. Eugenie should have confronted him, not run into the arms of Kiyo. She continues to make bad choices and I don't know how Mead is going to resolve the pregnancy in one book. I'm all for team Dorian, but still have hope for Volusian,

This was really great. I thought it was a little weird for a 13 year old to be doing some of these things, but sometimes that's what young adult books are all about! The main character also had just the right amount of vulnerability for me. Plus it just was great fun to read.

Published posthumously, I can't help but wonder if Miller ever meant this book to come out. OK, I may come back and finish this at some time, but for right now it's pissing me off that it's still sitting there in my "currently-reading" list. I haven't picked this up in months.
