A good quick read--interesting and somewhat frightening premise. I enjoyed it and am happily moving on to read book #2 in this series.

grotesque but oh so real, war should never be glorified......no one knows what it's like unless they have lived through it. this is an amazing account of Vietnam..... I read it in H.S. and it was very enlightening.....

I'd just like you guys to know that this is a reread, so I don't exactly have that big urge to rave about it to everyone anymore ( though I did the first time I read it), but I figured since I've been mentioning it around the blog so much lately I may as well write a review. That being said, I may be making references to the strong way I felt about the book the first time I actually read it. Unwind is one of those books that will linger for quite some time. It's just so amazing in so many different ways, that even after having read it a few times, I am simply amazed by how wonderful it is. The story begins with a problem. It's not necessarily the type of problem you can fix either, because the problem is this: Connor, Risa, and Lev are all more or less about to die, and there's they can do to nothing to stop it. Of course, they don't actually die (at least not in the beginning!!), because then there wouldn't be a story to tell, would there? Unwind was so much more than I had expected. That being said, I don't know exactly what I had expected going into the book, but it wasn't the depth and intensity I found. The characters were wonderful, all real and relate-able, and although the story is written in third person, I also loved the writing. It's a book I would definitely recommend, especially to fans of dystopian's, sci-fi's, and anyone looking for a slightly creepy read.

A timeless children's classic. I learned to read at a very early age largely on account of this book. Not only that, I still own the very copy of What Do People Do All Day I cut my literary teeth on. It's been loved to near death: the binding, long since disintegrated, now consists of three loops of candy-striped yarn, and the outside edges of most of the pages are in tatters. Yet Huckle and his companions live on, as industrious and helpful as they were forty years past. Richard Scarry's works nicely complement the less complicated but slightly deranged Dr. Seuss staples. Scarry's humor is more subtle, with most of the funny stuff going on in the background, more slapstick and less bizarre than Seuss's.

This historical text reads like a dry PhD dissertation published before someone with wit could get a hold of it.

The first chapter certainly caught my attention and made me uneasy! This book is told through the experiences and voices of different characters, all somehow involved in a scandal at a private school in Vermont. The event changes their lives drastically, maybe irrevocably, and the full truth of the situation doesn't arrive until the last chapter. I didn't think this was the best of Shreve's novels, but it did grab me and entertain me.

I loved this book. It is a powerful representation of a world that I don't really understand. It made me want to sit and visit with a muslim woman and know about her culture. I want to know if the things that I think are oppressive and unfair, are the same to her. I want to know what life looks like from behind a burqa.

Tough to read, but very interesting insights on life, government, economics, religion, education, what is 'good', etc etc

The most beautiful of broken hearts. 'The Namesake' is so real, so visceral that when it introduces elements of a life you'd never know you welcome them as if part of your own experiences. By the end of this book, you've been immigrant and native, in love and heartbroken, detroyed and redeemed. (PS: Go BU!)
