This book was lots of fun reading. It has a good message in it even though Mark Twain uses the "N" word over 500 times starting in the second chapter. It has a good ending.

Written in the time of Dante's oppressive Divine Comedy, this set of 100 tales is irreverent, ebullient and completely refreshing. Boccacio populates his tales with as many sinners as Dante, but instead of condemning them, he sets pleasure, joy, adventure and forgiveness at the top of his list of Christian virtues. He uses his literature to proselytize a different sort of theology, and the result is still completely jarring centuries later. This book makes people who hate classics go "woah". It's dirty. It's novel (still). Not essential to understand Chaucer, but recommended. Big, contentious points include ambivalence or even approval of rape (a repeat victim comes to enjoy the act in one tale), incest and lots of other vices and crimes. So, even the drawbacks are fun on this one, right?

I would give this 1.5 stars, if I could. I wanted to like this book and there is enough contained herein to give Shteyngart one more chance. I'm not in need of liking the protagonist, and Vladimir is an unlikeable character. Combining this fact, with the strangely ficitionalized Prague as a backdrop and the absurd machinations of the plot, I found reading beyond page 362 of this edition to be not worth my time. [If that is irritating, so is reading another 100 pages.] Prague in 1993 was such an rich and vibrant place. It seems so ripe for a novel, but Shteyngart twists ever so slightly into a fiction that doesn't seem to serve a purpose. Yes, there were gangsters, 25,000 American ex-pats, and bars where they hung out, and bars where the locals hung out, and good literature available in english, old ladies and pensioners who couldn't cope with the changes that they had seen. So, why, oh why, change all the names of the places, largely through making anagrams of the original names? There has to be a reason, but it is not apparent to me. Prior to his travel to Prava, there are a wealth of avenues for Vladimir in New York to go down. That Shteyngart chose a quasi-picaresque adventure for him to return, to Bohemia, but not to his homeland, ignores and eradicates potential character and plot developments, which may have been more satisifying. Indeed, although surrounded and acknowledging the legacy of more famous ex-pats, the ex-pat Vladimir does not reflect upon the world he has left behind, beyond realizing that he's been overly intertwined with his Jewish mohter and that he creates, and fosters the similar amorous relationships in a new land.

What can I say? This is Shakespeare, one of the greatest writers in the English language ever. His plays and poems are still required reading in British schools (although in my opinion they don't pick the best plays for the curriculum), and his work continues to be performed by theatre companies great and small all over the world. Not many other playwrights can say that nearly 5 centuries on from their deaths. This is just one of many editions to contain the full body of his work, but despite the cost it is well worth it to have it in such excellent presentation. The pages themselves are a bit thin, so you need to be careful to avoid tearing, but otherwise this is a beautiful volume to have on your shelves.

She is strong in how her hand hangs above my head as I read these poems. At any moment she could strike, and often does; but mostly I love that she is not afraid to caress me with that same hand. This work is most beautiful; Anne has a way with odd images. There is a lot to learn on the art of poetics from this gorgeous deity. Her growth as a poet is of particular interest, and is made easy to trace by such a collection. The book is for those who like Rimbaud and the moderns: both Anne and Rimbaud saw themselves as experience-seekers and prophets.

Notes upon rereading, May 2013: What I said before holds true. The practical aspects seem even more useful this time (and make me feel very lazy about my own planning!). And while I still disagree with some of the metaphysical aspects, this time they, too, seem much more useful in terms of dealing with dying Pagans and/or their survivors in these transitional times. Notes from first reading, January 2007: The pragmatic aspects I find incredibly useful. The theology (despite the fact that I myself practice Reclaiming-tradition Paganism, Starhawk's own tradition) and "history" drove me bonkers. Ignore those, and you'll be fine.

This book caught my attention when I saw the cover. The woman's face said,"I have a story to tell." Nana Veary's Spiritual Journey is a wonderful insight into her personal line of communication to God and the best that is in her. I appreciate the journey of each one of God's children. Nana helped me see my personal journey in a light that made me feel excited to continue seeking after all that is good. Nana is a woman worth getting to know. Her Aloha spirit is powerful!
