I wouldn't be able to live with myself giving this book any less than 5 stars. That being said, any rating system is comparative in nature, and this book sort of defies categorization or comparison. I have read A LOT of other books, and I have even read other books by McCarthy, but this book stands alone, sort of as its own entity. I am currently also reading All the Pretty Horses, also by McCarthy, and reading the two in close conjunction, I can see overlaps in writing style and affinity for that part of the country, and horses. But the books are not identical. As I said, Blood Meridian is its own animal. Over on my book blog, dunceacademy.com, we embarked on the intensely ambitious task of reviewing this book one chapter at a time. We did a good job, but only made it about exactly halfway through before other obligations pulled us away. It was a huge time investment. I would like to go back and finish sometime, but have no idea when that would be. The language is...well...indescribable. He uses words you have never heard before, I don't care who you are or what you have read. No one can read this book without adding at least a word or two to their vocabulary. I have heard the genre of the book described as "Western." That may be one of the grossest oversimplifications EVER. Yes, the story occurs, geographically, in the West. Yes, there are "cowboys" and "indians." Yes, historically, it takes place at about the same time as other classically "Western" novels. But that is where the similarities stop. It is an epic tale. It is gruesome. It is twisted and horrifying. It is probably the darkest, most grim book I have ever read. And there is no other character in literature like The Judge. You think you know evil? He is MORE evil. And brilliant. And charming. And charismatic. Which only makes him more scary. You need to read the entire novel to truly "get it," but The Judge is one of the most terrifying characters in all of literature. Would I recommend it? I don't know. Depends what you are in the mood for. I cannot emphasize enough: it is DARK. It will make you feel sick. It will keep you up at night. That being said, it is fascinating and intelligent and undeniably brilliant. But don't say I didn't warn you... I do plan to do more with this on the blog, both a more thorough overall review, and eventually back to a chapter by chapter analysis. But for now, here you have it.
