This was the most horrifically bad novella I have read in my whole life. It was like a 3rd grader decided to pepper the word fuck in a creative writing essay every few words. I like how Virginia is from an Italian orphanage. Virginia is totally an Italian name.. or not lol.

I'm going to read this as soon as I get my hands on it though sections of it are in the large, red Artaud anthology. Artaud finds one of his doubles in Heliogabalus, a Roman emperor who makes most other rulers look tame in comparison. The translation is done by the guy who did the recent Maldoror, so it's going to be good too.

A classic coming of age, female perspective, mental illness. Maybe if I try reading it a second time, when I don't have school work and other books to keep up with, I will understand the hype the I received from everyone who saw the book on my night stand for weeks. My sister gave it to me and swore I would fall in love with it. Also, maybe I should have read it when I was depressed last year because not too much of it stimulated my mind. I read Plath's poetry in the past and have enjoyed it but I guess I wasn't in the right mind set when I read this book. I'll give it another try.

**I just finished this for the 3rd time, and it gets even more delightful each time I read it. LOVE this book! This book was fantastic in every way - a heartfelt, fun, and serious story all tied beautifully together in a series of letters between the characters of the book. Through the story you discover the origin of the Guernsey Literary Society and the history of their island while they were occupied by the Germans during WWII. (I had no idea before I read this that Germany had occupied part of England - crazy!) I loved this book!!!
