3.5 Stars Nicole Whitcomb is on her way back home when a severe snowstorm blankets the small mountain road she is on, causing her car to run off the road. Michael Tyler witnessed the accident and saved Nicole from bleeding to death. Now these two strangers are snowed inside of Michael's home until the roads are clear. Nicole knows that the handsome stranger is hiding something, unaware of how dark the truth really is. At first Michael is not pleased at having a strange in his home. He feels a physical attraction to Nicole from the start and tells himself to stay away. Anyone who's ever read a romance novel knows that rarely works. Nicole is a very curious person and before long, Michael finds himself enjoying her company and their conversations. Things change even more when Nicole figures out Michael's secret. It's pretty obvious what Michael is from the start but there was still some anticipation because I wasn't sure how Nicole would react to the discovery. After the expected panic, Michael and Nicole start to really get to know each other. Both have secrets in their past and talking about them with one another allows them to move forward in a way they haven't been able to before. The romantic relationship they build is sweet but at times their conversations felt more like lectures than two people talking. There is no good guy versus bad or huge battle scenes in Nocturne. This book is about Michael and Nicole getting to know each other and forming a love that faces a unavoidable obstacle. This is a shorter novel so the relationship moves at a quicker pace but I could still feel the connection between these two really good characters. The ending is surprising for it being a paranormal romance and I really hope to see Michael and Nicole again. -Stephanie

I read this once in high school and again in college, and its dark, ironic humor underlying such tragedy just ripped my heart out both times. An excellent statement of why we should never forget this war and its repercussions, no matter how far away it gets or how much we'd like to gloss it over.

This is the first Le Carre book I've read, although I really enjoyed the film version of "The Constant Gardener." Both stories have lots of interesting post-Cold War twists on the spy-thriller genre. I will say that after hundreds of pages of (well-written, interesting) slow-burn intrigue I was kind of hoping for a more whiz-bang ending. The ending is totally appropriate for the message he's trying to relay, but maybe Hollywood has conditioned me to expect more from this type of build-up. Stupid Hollywood.

This is the first book in the Homecoming series. The background: 40 million years ago, the earth environment was destroyed and the planet became unfit to inhabit. So earth people hopped on a spaceship called the Oversoul in search of a new home, and finally settled on the Planet Harmony, with the Oversoul regulating their lives by controlling their minds, so that people would not destroy each other again. The story begins when the main characters begins to remember about earth again, as the Oversoul begins to break down. It is time to come home--to earth. I think one of the most interesting part is the relationship between the characters and the spaceship. In the course of time, people have come to worship the Oversoul as a god and a religion have developed around this concept. In a sense, the Oversoul does seem like a god. It knows everything that happens to the people on the planet and can to some extent control their minds and subsequently control what happens to their lives. The book also discusses about faith and miracles in this context. Quite interesting.

I categorized this as "comic fiction" because it essentially is a comic novel; in fact, it's often quite hilarious, though in the painful way that watching Michael Scott on "The Office" is hilarious (i.e., cringeworthy). Arthur Camden is high WASP, a well-bred, well-mannered, wealthy NYer of the old school, right down to his membership in the Hanover Street Fly Casters club and his vacationing in Bar Harbor etc. Funny!

People live in some crazy places--in the middle of a lava flow, in a city enclosed in a giant condo. He paints a picture of a few of the people who practice "extreme living" on a daily basis.

Christopher, a fifteen year old autistic kid, discovers his neighbor's dog who has been killed with a pitchfork and decides to investigate the murder. The book is written from the viewpoint of Christopher, who is extremely good with 'maths' and has a photographic memory, but can't understand facial expressions, doesn't like to be touched, and won't eat any yellow or brown foods. I liked how the reader is taken into the mind of this kid, someone who's completely disassociated with those around him, but through his own detailed observations, we can pick up on the frustrations and feelings of the adults around him, which incidently is the one thing that Christopher can't do. I'm glad the author took a chance and wrote the story as Christopher because honestly it wouldn't have been nearly as interesting otherwise. And I enjoyed the little touches, like numbering the chapters with prime numbers, the little drawings and mathmatical graphs. But that might just be the math nerd in me talking.

The sequel to The Name of the Wind felt a little long in places, such as the University segment and Kvothe's adventures, yet it's just as well written as the first book and was worth waiting for. I'm looking forward to the final book!
