I didn't like this one as much as I thought I would. Thanks to the summary on the back cover, I was expecting a funny, offbeat adventure travel book. Unfortunately, the promised humor was few and far between, interspersed with stories about such depressing subjects as the mass suicide at Jonestown. The later stories were more interesting, but not enough to redeem it.

Entertaining book, but by no means ground-breaking. It was interesting to see the story of Southern America in the 1960s told from a different perspective, however, the struggle only seemed a small piece. It seemed a bit down-played, and the harshest realities only told through stories and not part of the actual plot of the book. I enjoyed the narration being from the three women characters, and liked how the voice switched from one to another throughout the book.

easily and most memorably one of the worst books i've ever read.

Made a really good impression at first, because I liked the writing. Part one I would give 3.5 stars. Part 2 was way too long. I didn't enjoy being with these people, especially Richard (the narrator), because he got kind of boring. Half the time, he is sleeping. I started to think that this should have been written from the point of view of Henry, or anyone of the other interesting characters. The story really lost momentum. The funeral and the goings on before at the Corcoran's house could have been cut from the story. There are entire scenes that we didn't need to see, that could've been summed up in one sentence. 1.5 stars for part two, which leaves us with a total 2.5 stars.

I can't give you a good reason for saying why I just thought it was ok. I thought it was better than ok, but I wouldn't say I liked it. It was not To Be Liked. It was at times tender though, and I like that. I am lousy at writing reviews. I'll just say infidelity turns me off a character and if I don't like the main character I won't like a book. It's not you, Mr. Chabon, it's me. You too, Emma Bovary.

During the first 50 pages or so I had very high hopes for "Wicked Pleasure", for indeed it did start out wickedly good...but it fizzled really quick, and in record time everything seemed crazy repetitive. I tried real hard to stay into it, but in the end my imagination and interest gave up completely.

I enjoyed the book greatly. Leon is a delightful character and quite the handful!

2004 Caldecott Medal Winner I think the mediums used in this book are ink and oil paint. It looks like he may have done the oil painting first and applied the ink on top. The story recounts the tightrope walk of Philippe Petit between the two towers of the World Trade Center on August 7, 1974. I didn't think it would be an emotional story for me, but it was. Told very simply with beautiful illustrations, this book must have brought some healing to the hearts of a lot of Americans after 9/11. This positive memory of the towers when they were first built becomes symbolic of other positives in our country before that awful day, and reminds us to remember the good things in life. Although I've been in Washington State my whole life, 9/11/01 is scorched in my memory in the form of news broadcasts playing over and over again the images of planes exploding into the towers and people jumping to their deaths from the windows. I cried unexpectedly while reading this book and absorbing its message that 9/11 is not the only thing to remember about those towers--that there were good, triumphant things too, just as there are wonderful things to remember about all of the people who lost their lives on that day.
