Oh, gosh. You have no idea how much I wanted to read this book. This was like one of my MUST reads of the year and I was just dying to get my hands on it. I felt so lucky, privileged, and special that I was able to receive an ARC thanks to the generosity of my book blogging friend, Nafiza. I practically squealed like a wild woman and danced around the apartment when I got the package. We even decided to have a fun readalong to discuss it. (Awesome times I tell you). This is going to be such a difficult review to write for me. In the beginning, I was just totally in love with the story and it was shaping up to be a stellar read, hitting everything I liked but once it swung into the halfway mark, I began to like it considerably less and the more I think about this book, the more my dissatisfaction with it grows. Let’s start off with the good points shall we? Because there are a lot of good points. Leigh Bardugo’s writing is excellent. She definitely knows how to craft a sentence. Her descriptions are clear and vivid and her pacing is spot on. You’ll be drawn in immediately and can probably devour this whole story in one sitting. I really liked how she employed a sort of circular method to bring about revelations and background information. It’s neat how she laid everything out, teased us with it, and then brought it up again in key moments. Her world building was fun and immersive and I liked how she drew on her inspiration of Russian folklore to build everything up. It gave this a different feel and touch versus your regular medieval based fantasy. It’s not without its flaws though (which I will get to later). The magic system was kind of neat even if it’s not the most original. Mal is definitely my favorite character. He made the book for me. He’s so sweet, earnest, and says the most heart wrenching lines that has me swooning. He’s one of those male leads you want to take home and ladle kisses all over. He’s kind of got that stoic edge added with a touch of smooth charisma. Perfect, right? Now, let’s get into the things I did not like. The world building. You know, I was so in love with this world and when I read Tatiana’s review about how grievously wrong these aspects were in respect to Russian culture, I was so, so disappointed by this. The things I found so great about this book were nothing more than… fantasies. (view spoiler) But, anyway, enough of that. You know what’s really great about this book? THE KISSING SCENES! My word, can this woman right some AWESOME KISSES. I swooned like crazy. I am still so conflicted. Shadow and Bone is a great debut novel and Leigh Bardugo definitely has some real shining talent and I can see this book being loved by a great many people but... there are just so many what could have beens for me at the end.
