harrismcteyd
Harris Mcteyd harrismcteyd — This book was great. My only problem with it is that I knew from other reviews that it was some allegory of Stalin's reign in Russia in the 1930's. However, since I know absolutely nothing about Russia in the 1930's I couldn't draw any clever comparisons or conclusions of it as an allegory. Ideally, I would have read it in conjunction with cliff notes. Since I couldn't deduce any political implications, to me it mostly read as an extremely imaginative fairytale. I have never read any other book where the devil was one of the main characters, but I liked the unique interpretation. The demons and devil weren't just pure evil, they were complex, dynamic characters. I felt some sympathy towards just about every character and particularly liked the interplay between the demons. The use of different names in reference to the same characters was a little confusing at times, but I heard that this is relatively common in Russian literature, especially from this era. If I got really confused about a character or event, I would just reference it on the character list on www.wikipedia.org I would recommend this book to my more eccentric friends. My friends who recommended it to me in the first place as the most amazing book that they have ever read are on the quirky side. I think I will definitely have to read it again, but maybe next time after I have brushed up on my Russian history.

sakoyi
Sakoyi Amin sakoyi — I dropped away from Diana Gabaldon's main (hetero) romance series after the second or third book, mostly because het romance isn't my thing, and possibly because she shifted the locale to the Americas, while my own initial interest was because of the Scottish setting. ("Outlander", the first book, owes a certain amount to an old favourite of mine, "The Flight of the Heron", though they are certainly very different in tone, detail and degree of graphic sex!) Anyway, Lord John, a minor character in the het series, appears to be getting his own set of adventures; I enjoyed the first one, though it was short and fairly light. This one is much more substantial and really well done. The fine points of drawing room and battlefield ring true. I won't give away details of the plot so as not to spoil anyone, but if you read it, prepare to come up solidly against the harsh reality of 18th-century treatment of man-loving men. And also prepare to see our beloved Jamie Fraser utter some fairly virulent homophobic sentiments, in the true spirit of his time. (It's just as well I had the memory of a Fraser/Lord John sequence in one of the other books - Voyager? - where Jamie "gets over it" to the point of giving Lord John a wee kiss, to sustain me.) I have the next in the series on my shelf. Looking forward to it!

digibeng
Stefan Vukicevic digibeng — Though along the same realm of Anne Frank's diary, Nina Lugobskaya's diary is vastly difference. While Anne's diary is hopeful and beautifully written, Nina's diary is more cynical and contains her day-to-day life. Of course, Anne was stuck in the Annex while Nina could go out and about, so we learn more about Stalin's Russia in her diary than we do Hitler's regime in Anne's. Anne and Nina are very different girls. Anne Frank was pretty, charming, the type of girl everyone liked, especially boys. Nina Lugovskaya, on the other hand, was much darker, more cynical, and isolated from others. She was a bit of an outcast, which makes her diary read like a real teenager's. It really isn't fair to compare the two diaries, though, since Nina didn't get to edit hers beforehand like Anne did. Nina, while often moody and selfish, is a shrew observer, and you really get to see what Russia was like at the time. You learn about the day-to-day life there: school, shopping, and the police knocking down your door. Nina's father had been sent away for suspected suspicious activities and so she, her mother, and two older sisters were on their own in terms of money and food, both of which there was never enough. The most passionate you ever see Nina is when she's ranting against Stalin. I could really see the political climate and how it was going to turn out. Nina, though dreaming of being a writer as a kid, ended up being a painter. Like Anne, this is her only testimony to us. I'd recommend!
