** spoiler alert ** I liked this -- perfect for vacation, which is when I read it. It sort of fell flat and terse and depressing for me at the end, but that's also what was happening to Henry in a way, so I guess it made sense. I've always had a bit of an interest in time travel and it was interesting to read about that topic in something not in the sci-fi genre. Nice to see that topic in more of an Oprah-type book, but that may also turn some people way off.

This is a wonderful, non-fiction coming of age story about a 23 year old boy disillusioned with life. Even at his age he'd already been through a failed marriage, a college education he didn't know what to do with, and growing discontent with his country. Encouraged by a friend to get to know his country before rejecting it, he sets of on a two year hike through the american backwoods, where he meets interesting people and joins new families with his faithful dog who protects him. It's a wonderful story for the anthropological traveler.

This is another one of those books I wish I could give a 3.5 star rating. Lamb's writing is brilliant, as always, and the epic scope of the story (stories, really) is breath-taking. I did feel it bogged down in the middle with the weight of all the tragedies, and for a while there I picked up the volume with trepidation, going 'what terrible thing is going to happen NOW?' Also, after I Know This Much is True, which is one of my favorite books, it didn't quite rise to my expectations. I thought his blending of fiction and non-fiction was interesting, if sometimes distracting. My favorite little "almost real" bit was the re-branding of Mohegan Sun Casino as "Wequonnoc Moon." In the end, hope emerged, and I was weeping and laughing concurrently, as with all Wally Lamb novels.
