Anyone who has followed American politics for a while knows the outlines of the book's story, but the twists and turns have a lot to teach us. Their are many villains in the book, but no one who had the power to turn around the problem. Kaiser hands out blame to all sides (Democrats and Republican, pollsters and campaign organizers, lobbyists and aides) as even-handedly as the donors hand out money. I don't buy every assertion Kaiser makes (for instance, did the turning point in American politics really come in June 1976 with an idea hatched by renowned chemist Jean Mayer?) but I respect his research. He's also a consummate journalist who can merge human interest with social and political observations. Luckily, we now have an opportunity to fix politics that hasn't come since Watergate, or maybe since Lyndon Johnson's Great Society.

Great book, but it should come with a free gun, so you can blow your head off when your done reading it. Very depressing.

I read this when I was younger and, although Melville crafts some truly beautiful passages, I had a tough time getting through it. Still, I've been thinking of re-reading it lately...there's just something about it that stays with you.

I like this book a lot. It has many nuggests of good insight and wise quotes from everyone from Merton to Emerson. It reads "quietly" too and that helps to engage the reader in the content of the work of the book.

Loved this book -- very humorous with an awesome, strong female protagonist. Tiffany isn't perfect -- she's bossy, nosey, and not always tactful. But she's also very smart, very observant, and has a well devoloped sense of justice. Throughout the book she struggles with second guessing (and even third guessing) herself, until at a climactic moment she comes to accept her whole self, warts and all -- in a completly irrational, inappropriate and hilarious outburst. Some favorite quotes: "Witches have animals they can talk to, called familiars. Like your toad there." "I'm not familiar," said a voice from among the paper flowers. "I'm just slightly presumptuous." "He was [a] big [cat] to start with, but Ratbag flowed. He was so fat that, on any reasonably flat surface, he gradually spread out in a great puddle of fur." "Words worry them. See their swords? They glow blue in the presence of lawyers." "And I want her back so much, because she didn't know to talk to me and I was too scared to talk to her, and so we never talked and we turned silence into something to share." "There were things on sticks, things that gleamed and glistened in bowls. Nothing was simple. Everything had cream on it, or chocolate whirls, or thousands of little colored balls. Everything was spun or glazed or added to or mixed up. This wasn't food -- it was what food became if it had been good and had gone to food heaven." "Did you just say that? said her Second Thoughts, as all the pictsies stared at her and the boat spun in the surf. The first time he's ever said anything that wasn't about sweeties or weewee and you just corrected him?" "Yes," said a voice, and Tiffany realized it was hers again. The anger rose up joyfully. "Yes! I'm me! I am careful and logical and I look up things I don't understand! When I hear people use the wrong words, I get edgy! I am good with cheese. I read books fast! I think!
