Full Review to be posted soon. I hearted this book so much! The last book wasn't that engaging for me but this book has put the series back on track and more. Rachel has definitely grown from the first book and has learned from her past mistakes but this book has tied up some old plot threads and started a few but it does feel that things the series is heading for the final stretch. I am eagerly awaiting for the next book to see how the repercussions from this book pans out and the tentative hint of a new relationship for Rachel which I think will make a few people happy!

It's okay. Not a "read" as such but a decent reference book.

Love, Love, Love this book. By far the most original novel I have ever read.

I've read and re-read this book several times. I LOVE it. It's just good, plain fun.

Another solid, highly entertaining collection by David Sedaris. Several, but not all, of the pieces in this one deal with family. "Hejira" is particularly poignant; it deals with a defining moment in Sedaris's life--except that nobody else involved told Sedaris why it was significant; his parents merely assumed that he knew what was going on. On a more positive note, "Six to Eight Black Men" had me laughing uncontrollably. (Finished < 2009-04-11 17:15 EDT)

This is one of the better goodreads giveaway wins that I have received over the years. Hooray for Michael Lee West for keeping it fun, light and interesting. Very lovable characters and a good tight storyline will keep you smiling throughout. I brought this one to Mexico where, after I had finished it, my companion read it and loved it every bit as much as I did. I left it at the resort in the Mayan Riviera where it will be entertaining travelers from around the globe for a long time.

I read this a while ago for my English class, and while I did enjoy it, I found it a little bit boring, and I did not really understand it at first. I couldn't really understand what it was about until the very end. However, I believe this book is an extremely high quality one, with an interesting spin on the time of apartheid in South Africa.

I consider A Sweet Smell of Roses (about two young sisters who secretly join a Civil Rights march and rally) to be a loving and emotionally engaging story, an evocative account that not only honours the many young people who contributed to the Civil Rights Movement, but also shows children that they can "do" that they can participate and contribute to causes that are important to them. I would, however, also tend to agree with my GR friends Lisa and Krista, that while the story is certainly moving, poetic and inspiring, it is also rather spare and slight in content and leaves me wanting and craving more details, more historical background and cultural information. And consequently, I am actually more moved and wowed by Eric Velasquez' evocative black and white illustrations than by Angela Johnson's narrative text. Combined with the little touches of red in the roses, the American flag and the teddy bear's ribbon, the illustrations are both amazing and memorable (to me, the little splashes of red represent love, the hope for equality, but also the belief of the Civil Rights Movement in the basic democratic principles of the United States, of the Constitution, the inalienable right of all people to be seen, to be regarded as equals, as persons). Due to the spareness of the text and the lack of historical detail even in the rather short author's note, I would not necessarily consider this as an adequate introduction to the Civil Rights Movement. However, if used in conjunction with other, more historically detailed sources, A Sweet Smell of Roses would indeed be a wonderful way to not only pay homage to the contributions of the many young people who participated in the freedom marches, but also to demonstrate that children are strong in and of themselves, that they can and should be actively involved in relvant causes , that they can make a difference.

This book is quite informative for amateur font fans and amusing at times. But while the author is obviously passionate about the subject, his writing style is not as sexy as the letters he fawns over.
