A look at a small town in turn-of-the-century Turkey back when it was Anatolia of the Ottoman Empire, full of Greeks, Turks, Armenians, Jews, Muslims, and Christians who shop at each other's stores, intermarry, go to each other for advice, and pretty much all get along. The first part is a tender slice-of-life portrait of the close-knit town and its characters; the second part is the arrival of WWI, the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, and the destruction of a peaceful coexistence that had gone on for centuries. You get wrapped up in all the families, friendships, romances, and intrigues, and learn a version of WWI that the Euro-centric American school system completely ignores. Pretty freaking sad by the final pages, but interesting and worth a read.

I loved this book, although it was unbelievably hard to read at times. Lots of tragedy in this story of two women's lives in Afghanistan. But just when I thought I couldn't stand reading one more sad twist...... Great read. I highly recommend it.

Great book. Wilde's only novel, it is eerie and entertaining and altogether valuble. It's well written and an honest portrayal of the inner decay caused by sin and selfishness. I find this ironic or maybe theraputic, seeing as how Wilde struggled with similar tendencies as his Mr. Dorian Gray.
