I really enjoyed this book. It looked at the relationship between slave women and their masters in a different way. These selected women were their masters' concubines and there was nothing they could do about it. while some fought with all their being to be free, some accepted and almost embraced their fate as slaves to their masters' every whim. It amazed me how much fear these women lived with on a daily basis... fear of disappointing their master, fear of their children being sold, fear of becoming pregnant and bringing children into slavery... so much fear! And yet they still served and cared for their masters for much of their lives. I recommend this to readers who enjoyed The Help, although it is much different, it is a new look at slavery in the US.

I've read this book twice, once as an adolescent and this summer several decades later. I find the book far more disturbing and dark today. It's worth rereading if it's been a long time since the first/previous reading.

Esperaba mucho mas... lo único que hizo fue revivir una historia antigua ya tocada por Holy blood Holy Grial y confundir a mucha gente preguntándose "eso es real?"

This book always makes me want to do bad things. I can never understand that. It's such a sad story, and yet by the end I want to be doing everything she is doing.

** spoiler alert ** What the bleeping, da-bleepity, bleep!!!!! Loved this book, loved it, until the end. Now I hate it. I can't give it less than 3 stars because the writing itself is wonderful. French's description of a summer that belongs to a 12 year old, right at the start almost had me in tears as I flashed back to those wonderful, amazing days. And as I read through and she hints at what is to come ..... she knows how to keep a reader hooked! But the ending. So disappointing. And it made me return to the book with a more critical eye. Now I see all the times she foreshadowed a major issue, only for it never to occur. I wish I had kept track of how many times the narrator ends a chapter with a thought along the lines of "If only I had known then, what I know now." Hinting that the psychopath from Cassie's past would emerge again, hinting that he was imprisoned, hinting that he lied, hinting, hinting, hinting. I simply can't fathom why she wouldn't allow the readers to know what happened in the woods in 1984. I would have even accepted a supernatural/ghost ending she had hinted about throughout. Clearly, with such detail to the missing children (3 gashes in the shirt, blood inside a pair of shoes that had been taken off one of the children, a hair barrette worn that day by Jaime showing up along side the newly murdered child) French had to have thought out what had happened in 1984. Why not include it?
The blurb sounds interesting but the vapid stupidity of the heroine makes this book unreadable. The trouble starts from the very beginning when the brothers come off as bullies instead of protective but the heroine's entitled TSTL behavior shows that she is indeed incapable of making her own decisions. She lies, cries at a drop of hat, whines, gets caught in a compromising position out of sheer STUPIDITY! and has to be rescued by the hero and is simply completely brainless twit. I'm supposed to like this bimbo? To me, the heroine is a combination of Lydia from Pride and Prejudice and Marianne from Sense and Sensibility. That is NOT a good combination. The hero? Eh. There is such a thing as 'too much of a rake' IMHO but that's not really the point. I never got a chance to really make up my mind about him because of the twit heroine. Frankly I'm stunned that this is the same author that wrote the awesome England's Perfect Hero. Did I mention how much I HATED the heroine? GRRRRRR!!!

I think this is the best of *all* the detective fiction genre, hands down. But it's much more than that. It's true poetry, intrigue, gorgeous vintage California, noir satisfaction, and more more more. Chandler's greatest work.

A good book that introduces you to a new world and new ideas. Humans are striving to catch up to the alien community they have joined. It is a fast paced book and I enjoy the authors way of telling a story.
