I would say that Belinda was a modern-day Lolita, if I were pretentious enough to allege that I had read Lolita, which I have not. However, reading this made me wish that I had so that I could make the comparison in an educated manner. What I can say is that Rice begins describing a 44 year old man's relationship with a 16 year old girl from the man's perspective in such a way that it almost gives you the creeps, making you feel guilty and dirty just for reading about it, then as she fleshes out the characters, especially Belinda herself, you end up rooting for these two to work it out and be together forever. That's quite a feat. And, from what I've read about Lolita, this has a much more pleasant conclusion. Fans of Rice writing as Roquelaure will find this rather sedate, but fans of Rice writing as Rice will recognize the style and appreciate the amped up sensuality and artistry of the text. Fans of Rice, whichever nom de plume she chooses, like me, will just be entranced.

I really liked this book -- but had a hard time finding sympathy for the main character until about 3/4 of the way through. The historical part of the novel was amazing. As a Westerner living in the East, I had a difficult time feeling empathy for Susan. I liked her as a character, but I knew that I wouldn't care for her as a person. Oh my gosh, I'm so behind in writing reviews! So quickly: The strength of this book is that it is a narrative. The things I found most interesting were the most personal. It was so refreshing to see the human side of a politician. I absolutely fell in love with Barack...whether or not he can turn things around is seriously up for debate. His heart is in the right place though. That I do not doubt. Would be three and a half stars, if possible. Just not the kind of thing that I enjoy reading on a regular basis, but very well done. Also, since I may be teaching this book to college undergrads in the fall, I thought I'd better read it.

I LOVE Anne Lamott. I know some people have said that Plan B and Grace (Eventually) are just a repeat of Traveling Mercies, but I disagree. Her writing is alternatingly achingly beautiful and utterly hilarious. And her essays share such simple wisdom and truth.
