A compelling critique of what he dubs "procedural liberalism," I find myself attracted to Sandel's intent but repelled by some of the consequences of his philosophy. I for one am not quite ready to abandon the importance of individual liberty and to give a privileged position for religious appeals in politics.

I always think that this series can't get any better, but Patricia Briggs always proves me wrong. Another excellent installment in the series!

It reminded me of Twilight in that I loved reading it and couldn't stop, but the writing isn't spectacular. How does that happen? I really liked the charactors and rooted for them even though they weren't that well developed. I found that the charactors cried every other page and I didn't. Kreitzer could have done a better job of developing emotion. And even having said that... I read it in one sitting and can't wait for the next installment. I don't get it.

Uprising tells the story of three girls: Yetta, a Russian Jewish immigrant who is fueld by a passion for a strike and better treatment; Bella, an Italian girl trying to make money to send home to her starving family; and Jane, a wealthy society girl who begins to feel trapped by the laws and rules that her riches create. The three of them are brought together in the Shirtwaist Workers Strike, and through twists of fate become friends. Their lives are intertwined, until the fateful day of the Triangle Factory Fire. This book is gorgeous and passionate and powerful, and the ending made me cry. I have read lots of books where bad things happen, and most of them my eyes stay dry. This book made me cry. Because it was tragic, because I really cared about the girls. Because it was real. Margaret Peterson Haddix has written a horde of excellent middle-grade novels. This is (I think) her first novel for teens, and it is fantastic.

Fun story. Susan Ericksen did a great job reading it. One of the best sounding audio books I've ever come across.

Lord, help me. I am currently reading it for high school, and I'm taking the fact that the book fell into two pieces as an omen. One bad event will likely lead to countless others. I'm not even out of the introduction, yet this book is already a walk in hell. (Pardon my language.) But, honestly, I'm an AP student- I mean, I read and I love writing- but I still get headaches merely following his train of thought- not to mention that I'm 20-something pages into the thing and there has not yet been one action. I hate it, honestly and truly. It almost make re-reading Lord of the Flies sound like a warm and inviting daydream.

Quite an interesting little book. I particularly liked the sections on Jesus and Yeshua, as I'm more familiar with the subject. The section on Yahweh was more confusing, as Bloom ranged into subjects beyond and out of my field of comprehension, like gnostic Judaism, kabbalah, ruminations on shekkinah, and ancient and recent talmudic sages/prophets. Overall, his argument is that the New Testament is a bald misreading of the Torah, and the personality of Jesus is incompatible with the fiery one of Yahweh. Overall, though, there were way too many digressions into and comparisons with Shakespeare and Hamlet, as well as Freud, which seemed badly dropped in and completely unrelated to the subject. What they have to do and how they comment on Yahweh and Jesus, I still don't know. But it was well-written and thought-provoking and seemed very smart.

The first section of this book, the War poems, is very stark and moving. The imagery is gripping and powerful. The rest of the collection is mostly about her life (childhood, adulthood, caring for and losing parents), while all touching topics, they somehow are not as engaging as the section on war. The only exception being the poem about the inmate on deathrow--not sure how that one slipped into her poems about her life--it has the strength of the poems about war from the first part of the book.

I know....I usually despise Nicholas Sparks, so cliche and corny, and this one isn't much different but it was laying around last night when I was bored and so now I've read about half of it and of course I have to finish it!
