So, when I was 14, I was really into this YA series called "Fearless" about this girl who was "born without fear." Her father was a spy but she didn't really know it until she was older, and her mother was Russian (cliché much, I know). They taught her all these different languages and how to play chess and also awesome fighting skills; she was basically a genius with superpowers, but no friends. She was very much an anti-hero, self-conscious, reclusive, depressed and generally unaware of her own awesomeness. Her best friend was a guy in a wheelchair. I'm still convinced that both Dark Angel and Alias (especially Alias) were completely ripped off this book series. What does this have to do with Camus? Well, in one of the books, she references "The Stranger" continuously throughout, as she expresses her own feelings of isolation and spiritual "nausea" with the world. The really cool part was that she referenced it in French. I can remember her quoting the first line, clear as day: "...maman est morte." After I finished reading that volume, so full of Camus references, I went straight to B&N and picked a copy of "The Stranger" off the shelf. I read the first line and was immediately dissatisfied with the translation. I don't know why exactly, I just remember being disgusted enough that I refused to read beyond the first line, and I vowed to never read any further in English. I decided right there that I would learn French, and someday I would read "L'étranger" the way it was meant to be read. Almost ten years later, I have finally accomplished that goal. I suppose ten years is quite a long time to take to accomplish something so simple as reading a book, but at least now I feel like I've really seen something through.

Please check out Electrifying Reviews for more reviews like this, plus giveaways, interviews, and more! The Book of Blood and Shadow caught my eye the moment I first discovered its existence. I wanted to get my hands on it so bad that when I finally got it, I started reading almost immediately. And while I had no idea what was in store, I was pleasantly surprised by the rich, thought-provoking story that I found. The Book of Blood and Shadow is about so many things, and it deals with so many important issues, such as love, loss, and faith. And Robin Wasserman doesn’t sugarcoat any of these topics either. The Book of Blood and Shadow is filled with emotion and depth, and I felt as if I was living in the world Wasserman wrote out, and that’s something you don’t get in every book. While it does deal with these emotional issues, The Book of Blood and Shadow also has a very unique side to it that is unlike anything I’ve read before. Nora and her friends are thrown into a chaotic mystery and then encounter mysterious societies, centuries old secrets, and a connection between each other that only their adventures could bring them. Robin Wasserman is a fantastic writer, and I was completely enamored while reading The Book of Blood and Shadow. Every detail is so vivid while not slowing the story down or breaking the excitement. One thing I did unfortunately notice was that for whatever reason, I just couldn’t keep my interest with The Book of Blood and Shadow. And not because it is bad—because it’s not—it’s just that for whatever reason, I had to make myself read it. Nora was a valiant and smart protagonist, but I did find myself getting annoyed with her a few times. All of the supporting—well, I can’t really say supporting since they all played such a big role—all of the other characters I should say, were extremely realistic and dimensional. The Book of Blood and Shadow is rich and vivid and emotional and is so many things. Though its pace isn’t lightning fast, it is still a book I would highly recommend. It’s one of those books that you read slowly, absorbing every little detail with pleasure.

Muhteşem Gatsby - Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald TrendKitaplar Kütüphanesi

This pathbreaking, Pulitzer-prize-winning book is a study of the life, labor, and social connections of a rural midwife, Martha Ballard, based on her manuscript diary in the Maine State Library. A MIDWIFE'S TALE changed the way historians researched and wrote women's history. In the 1970s and '80s, students of women's history primary focused on the records of literate, middle- and upper-class women, and defined their lives as a struggle against the strictures of a patriarchal society. Ulrich, by contrast, chose to study the life of a modestly-educated woman of limited means, and to describe her daily business rather than her conflicts with others. She found that women like Ballard enjoyed a fair amount of autonomy, even power, in early American society: they sold homespun, garden crops, and dairy goods to neighbors; commanded the labor of their daughters and of boarding teenagers from neighboring households; and, in the case of midwives, presided over the rituals of birth and life. (Martha Ballard fulfilled these latter tasks quite well, losing only 19 babies from the 814 births she attended, and providing medical care to dozens of her neighbors). Ulrich's book reminds us that in history, "the petty struggles and small graces of ordinary life" (p. 343) were as important as longer-term struggles for legal equality and citizenship. A note for readers: while the early chapters of Ulrich's book can be slow going, the latter half of the book includes many exciting episodes, including a mass murder and a violent rural insurgency.
