Little Black Dress is what I wanted The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake to be – a contemporary story with a magical but believable twist. It’s not as literary as Of Bees and Mist (my favorite of this genre) but it’s charming enough that I was able to overlook that. There’s not too much to say that’s not in the flap copy – there’s a magic dress that shows the wearer a glimpse of her future. There’s a rift between mother and daughter that they can no longer ignore when the mother suffers a sudden stroke. The daughter’s discoveries of her mother’s current life, and her past, bring to light more questions than answers, and finding resolution requires her to do some soul searching and change her life. The story winds up neat and tidy, but in a nicer way than I expected. I think the author could have explored a mental illness angle a little further, since it was a bit pat the way it was initially presented, but I was okay with the way it ended. I’d compare Little Black Dress to Sarah Pekkanen’s work – the relationships aren’t quite as finely teased out, but the accessibility is the same and I had the same quiet satisfaction when finishing this as I did Skipping a Beat. This is a solid book club pick – much to talk about, especially as there are some grey areas in a number of the relationships for members to expound upon. I’d definitely be open to more by Susan McBride.

Tarihi Değiştiren Suikastler - Fatih Bayhan TrendKitaplar Kütüphanesi

Upon reading the initial summaries of The Tomb both here and on Amazon, I really wasn't sure if I was going to have an interest and read it; I'm glad I decided to give it a chance. Jack (of many different last names) is an off-the-grid mercenary living in 1980s New York City. Repairman Jack, his moniker, is a pun of what he actually does for a living. Think of him like an off-the-grid MacGyver minus the using-a-toothbrush-and-a-shoelace-to-destroy-a-munitions-plant angle. In this first installment of the Repairman Jack series, Jack is propositioned by Kusim Bhakti to find a necklace stolen from Kusim's grandmother from a mugger. After completing this relatively easy task with a violent twist, his ex-wife Gia reluctantly calls him out of the blue with a problem. One of her wealthy aunts has gone missing and enlists Jack to help find her. Gia and her daughter Vicky temporarily move into her aunt's large midtown home to keep her company. While Jack is attempting to locate her, odd odors have been appearing in Gia's aunt's home and soon, Gia's other aunt disappears. Jack finds that the disappearances are tied to a known person and soon, a third person disappears.....I won't give away any more spoilers. Throughout the story, Wilson supplements the reader with a sub-plot set in India in the mid 1800s during British rule involving the Westphalen family and the temple of Kali, which is a backdrop for the latter half and the climax of the story. The book was an unexpectedly good read, combining action with a bit of science fiction and Indian folklore (whether or not it's genuine I do not know). I'm not usually interested in science fiction but it plays as a secondary component in the story. I look forward to the next books in the series.
