Tall and lean and light skinned, Tonina has always been an outsider among the dark, stocky people of Pearl Island. Her parents found her floating on the sea in a basket, and now that she is 21, unmarried, and unlikely to be (considering her differences), they send her on a made-up errand to the mainland, hoping that she will find her people. What she finds is one harrowing adventure after another. Believing that she is seeking a healing red flower, Tonina makes her way to Mayapan, heart of Mayan civilization, and comes under the protection of Kaan, hero of the ball field. She becomes caught up in the intrigue and danger of court life and the object of a twisted vendetta. As Tonina, Kaan, and their strange group of followers make their way to what will one day be Mexico, they find their people and each other. Combining historical places and cultural references with a little magic and a lot of romance, Wood creates an interesting look at the founding of the Aztec nation. What an awesome book! I loved it! I really loved it! All the details and descriptions of the ancient cities! I loved that Barbara Wood researched for her book. I mean, how many books have you read before and found more than one mistake in the geography? The character were very interesting and one could identify with them. The whole story, even if fiction seemed so real! Stunning! I was really blown away from the first page on! Alone the pronunciation of the Mayan cities were difficult to read. But that didn't make it less gripping. ;)

Yalnız Kadın Mutlu, Huzurlu Biraz Da Şımarık TrendKitaplar Kütüphanesi

It's always interesting reading a book that takes place in the 90's before the Internet was booming. Just to see what a mere 20 years has meant technology-wise! This was a good mystery and it contained a truly scarring plot - brutal murders, serial killer - that's some frightening stuff. I might even give this a 3.5. I liked the characters, but would have liked to see more development of some of the others. I found the protagonist, Dr. Brennan, to be borderline shrill as the book wore on. The endless questions lumped together.. did he do this? Why did he say that? Where was he going? What sweater was he wearing? There were sections with about 10 questions crammed together like that, and while I think the author was trying to create a sense of Brennan's actual thought process, it made me feel like I had developed serious anxiety and basically wanted to smack Brennan and tell her to calm down! It also reminded me of Lassie. Where's Timmy Girl? Is Timmy in the well? Did he fall in? Is he close by? The setting of Montreal was splendid as I admittedly am not Canadian-wise except for knowing about the French/English split, so it was nice to have a little literary romp around the city. I also wasn't a big fan of Gabby and thought the development of that story was a little awkward. What kind of a friend acts the way she does? So it was tough to attach myself on the "like-ability" scale to many of the characters, but I thought the story itself was great and kept me adequately freaked out and intrigued.
